Verbindingen met silicium zijn al duizenden jaren een wezenlijk onderdeel van de menselijke samenleving: vuursteen is immers ook een siliciumverbinding, net als glas. Zuiver silicium vindt onder meer toepassing in de staalindustrie, elektronica en zonnecellen. Silicium is een halfgeleider: met behulp van een spanning kun je de geleiding aan of uit zetten. Daarmee kun je een elektronische schakeling maken voor in de pc of mobieltje, of een zonnecel. Net als bij glas zorgt toevoeging van een heel klein beetje van een ander element voor een grote verandering van de eigenschappen van het materiaal. Uit recent onderzoek blijkt dat voor zonnecellen de zuiverheid iets minder kritisch is. Maximaal een op de miljoen onzuiverheden is goed genoeg, mits het niet om hardnekkige vervuilingen gaat. Daarmee kunnen de productiemethoden iets goedkoper worden dan voor chips en wordt zonnestroom steeds rendabeler.
