"L'Historiarum compendium di Giorgio Cedreno abbraccia un arco temporale che, iniziando dalla creazione del mondo arriva fino al 1057. Cedreno si dedicò a una complessa e laboriosa opera di compilazione utilizzando per il suo lavoro un gran numero di fonti. Il molteplice uso di queste ultime, tuttavia, si esaurisce con la morte di Stauracio (a. 811): con l'avvento al trono imperiale di Michele I Rangabe, infatti, la Synopsis historiarum di Giovanni Scilitze assurge a fonte esclusiva di questa cronaca. Considerando ciò, sembra ragionevole escludere da questa edizione il segmento scilitziano, cioè gli anni dall'811 al 1057, assumendo come termine cronologico conclusivo di essa l'anno 811. A partire da questa data i manoscritti cedreniani diventano in realtà testimoni del testo di Giovanni Scilitze e il loro uso trova congrua collocazione nell'ambito della tradizione manoscritta di quell'autore."--
