2019 marks the 50th anniversary of the first residents moving into the Barbican Estate in London. This new book is a celebration of this unique complex - looking at the design of the individual flats as well as its status as a brutalist icon. Author and designer Stefi Orazi interviews residents past and present, giving an insight into how life on the estate has changed over the decades.0The complex, designed by Chamberlin, Powell and Bon, is now Grade II listed, and is one of the world's most well-known examples of brutalist architecture. Its three towers - Cromwell, Shakespeare and Lauderdale - are among London's tallest residential spaces and the estate is a landmark of the city. This is a beautifully illustrated, comprehensive guide to the estate, with newly commissioned photography by Christoffer Rudquist. It will show in detail each of the 140 different flat types, including newly drawn drawings of the flats as well as original plans and maps.0Includes fascinating texts by leading architects and design critics, including John Allan of Avanti Architects on the unique building materials and fittings of the flats, and Charles Holland of Charles Holland Architects (and FAT co-founder) on the home and how these concrete towers have become such an integral part of Britain's domestic and architectural history.

The Work of Neave Brown Architect explores the ethos and ideas of the Anglo-American architect Neave Brown (1929-2018), winner of the RIBA Gold Medal 2017. Part of a City gets its title from Brown’s Gold Medal acceptance speech, when he observed: “We weren’t making housing, we were making part of a city.” The book brings together his writing and design projects, including his celebrated large-scale urban housing work for Camden Council, and the later projects in Italy and The Netherlands, the latter undertaken in private practise with David Porter. Part of a City re-presents original critiques from the 1960s and 1970s by prominent figures such as Reyner Banham, Bob Maxwell, Christopher Woodward and Ed Jones, with new writing by architects.

Most of Europe’s housing was built between 1945 and 1975. In only 30 years, the stock was not only renewed, but also significantly expanded. The public sector played a key role, as states and participating institutions sought a way to tackle the existing housing shortage. They also recognised a unique opportunity to implement their political ideals. For the first time, this publication presents how such a fundamental renewal of dwelling and its architectural implementation was achieved. Comparison between individual projects reveals universal themes, as well as local aspects integrated into the architecture. The diversity of housing themes in the post-war period is presented on two levels: firstly through an archive of exemplary housing developments and secondly with a collection of texts that engage with detailed aspects of housing in the examined cities. The archive of housing projects consists of original plans, sketches, photographs and short texts.Today, many of the presented buildings are in danger of being demolished or have already been removed, since they were not appreciated sufficiently. The dominant narrative is one of deficiencies. The value debate with respect to preserving such buildings lacks visions for the future. This book aims to renew the existing narrative and thereby inspire a positive approach to such post-war buildings. The study is based on 54 selected settlements and buildings from Zagreb, Cologne, Oslo, Porto, Lyon, Athens and the region of Liverpool/Manchester and Leeds/Sheffield.
