Abstract

International lecturers and academics address issues centred on the fundamental role played by the urban centres and port poles of Adriatic Puglia and the Tyrrhenian Sea in ancient and modern history for the development of Mediterranean civilization. The common denominator of the themes tackled is therefore the urban historical landscape, outlined through the gaze of the most varied disciplines - from the history of art, architecture and the city to urban historical iconography and cartography, from archaeology to economic history, to that of building materials and their technological and chromatic use - drawing on many, and in more than one case unpublished, documentary and iconographic sources. A contribution of ideas in the common objective of knowledge and enhancement of the landscape, urban and architectural environment of those historic centers within the current debate on the fate of cultural heritage in Italy. For the territory of Gallipoli and Salento, a valuable tool for the identification of the most appropriate strategies for the exploitation of its recognized beauty, not separated from traditional hospitality.

Abstract

In 1983, with a view to developing the site, an archaeological study began, largely centred on the site of the former canonical cloister of Saint-Nazaire d'Autun, mentioned in documents as early as the 9th century, and taking into account both the buried remains and the remarkably preserved elevations. At the same time, the remains of the old cathedral were being analysed, as opportunities arose. The various interventions revealed the importance of this site, which gradually faded into the urban landscape in favour of the Cathedral of Saint Lazarus, erected at the beginning of the 12th century, while at the same time helping to renew our knowledge of the episcopal and canonical groups.

Abstract

Global urbanization creates challenges towards sustainability and human well-being. Urban areas are dependent on the ecosystems beyond the city limits but also benefit from the internal urban green places. An understanding of the importance of urban ecosystem services means that urban greenery can be designedly maintained or even expanded. As cities are expected to grow at a rapid rate in the coming decades, it is important that the ecosystem perspective is understood and valued by city planners and political decision-makers. This special issue highlights some aspects related to urban sprawl dynamics and urban ecosystem management. Observations and studies presented in ten papers show that urbanization affects essential ecological, economic, and social landscape functions, whose importance is often undervalued in cities worldwide.

Abstract

"Motor City Green is a history of green spaces in metropolitan Detroit from the late nineteenth- to early twenty-first century. The book focuses primarily on the history of gardens and parks in the city of Detroit and its suburbs in southeast Michigan. Cialdella argues Detroit residents used green space to address problems created by the city's industrial rise and decline, and racial segregation and economic inequality. As the city's social landscape became increasingly uncontrollable, Detroiters turned to parks, gardens, yards, and other outdoor spaces to relieve the negative social and environmental consequences of industrial capitalism. Motor City Green looks to the past to demonstrate how today's urban gardens in Detroit evolved from, but are also distinct from, other urban gardens and green spaces in the city's past"--
