Abstract

This book discusses how pleasure, as an emotional motivation, can play a leading role in improving the learning of new cognitive skills and abilities. Set in a research center orientated to innovate educative techniques for optimizing the learning process, this case study is focusing on the power of pleasure (joy) as a strategy to better the standard education systems in Argentina and beyond. This editorial project is based on an efficient experiment known as “PANCOE” where pre-graduate students of tourism bachelor at the University of Palermo, Argentina, were subject to different pleasurable experiences mainly marked by eating, tasting dishes and non-alcohol drinks while cooking and kneading bread pieces. PANCOE aims to integrate students' senses with their emotions, academic performance, and digital platforms. PANCOE devotes efforts to transforming negative feelings like fear into positive ones like joy. As an outcome, students who had taken part in PANCOE not only obtained higher degrees but also completed their studies with a bachelor's degree. Therefore, PANCOE situates as a promising and exciting tourism education method to better the academic performance of low-grade students in tourism and to bring creativity to the tourism classroom for all students.

Abstract

A partir de l’estudi de la tradició, el patrimoni i el turisme, Llorenç Prats ha reflexionat sobre els imaginaris col·lectius hegemònics en relació amb la identitat i sobre els mecanismes polítics i simbòlics que intervenen en la seva formació i el seu desenvolupament. En aquest sentit, la contribució de l’autor a l’antropologia catalana ha estat cabdal, perquè ha desconstruït alguns paradigmes de la nació i la identitat catalanes. A mitjan anys noranta va investigar sobre la categoria i l’ús del patrimoni com a artefacte cultural, cosa que va tenir una notable influència a escala nacional i internacional, i, ja més recentment, el seu treball s’ha orientat a l’estudi antropològic del turisme. Aquest llibre, que reuneix textos publicats per Prats entre 1985 i 2014, és una mostra representativa del seu llegat acadèmic i una eina útil per al debat, la docència i la recerca, així com un estímul per interrogar-se sobre la naturalesa, el caràcter i la funció social del que ell mateix anomena «artificis culturals».

Abstract

This book examines and analyzes tourism consumption and tourist experiences, employing a systematic and case study-driven perspective. Covering approaches with a wider geographical background, it considers issues like tourism place experience and co-creation, as well as the behavior of tourists on guided tours, at trade shows and exhibitions, and in museums. Dedicated chapters deal with the aspect of customer satisfaction in places such as hotels or restaurants. In closing, the book highlights tourist behavior in the context of cultural heritage, regional and cultural differences and the general frameworks of consumer happiness and responsibility. Given its focus, the book provides a unique view on the interplay of tourism consumption and tourist experiences, and presents a comprehensive selection of case studies to exemplify and discuss in detail the frameworks covered and the current state of practice.

Abstract

"The sustainability of tourism is increasingly under question given the challenges of overtourism, COVID-19, and the contribution of tourism to climate and environmental change. Degrowth and Tourism provides an original response to the central problem of growth in tourism, an imperative that has been intrinsic within tourism practice, and directs the reader to rethink the impacts of tourism and possible alternatives beyond the sustainable growth discourse. Using a multi-scaled approach to investigate degrowth's macro effects and micro indications in tourism, this book frames degrowth in tourism in terms of business, destination and policy initiatives. It uses a combination of empirical research, case studies and theory, to offer new perspectives and approaches to analyse issues related to overtourism, COVID-19, small-scale tourism operations and entrepreneurship, mobility and climate change in tourism. Interdisciplinary chapters provide studies on animal-based tourism, nature-based tourism, domestic tourism, developing community-centric tourism, and many other areas, within the paradigm of degrowth.
