Post Scriptum Christer Strömholm is by far the largest monograph detailing the life and work of one of Swedens greatest photographers. With nearly 270 of Christer Strömholms best photographs, and including a biography by author Johan Tell and essays by journalist Carole Naggar and gallery owner Christian Caujolle. Christer Strömholm (1918-2002) is considered to be one of the most important Swedish photographers of our time. He spent most of his life in Sweden but early on made France his second home. He founded the legendary photography school Fotoskolan in Stockholm in 1962 and inspired an entire generation of photographers. His first book, Poste Restante, made him a renowned photographer and his depiction of transsexuals in the Paris of the 1960s resulted in Vännerna från Place Blanche (The Friends from Place Blanche). His images from travels in Japan, Spain and the United States have won wide acclaim and he is represented in several of the worlds leading museums. Christer Strömholm was appointed professor of photography by the Swedish government and was honoured with the prestigious Hasselblad Award in 1997.

When we are born, we are each assigned a gender based on our physical anatomy. But why is it that some people experience such dissonance between their biological sex and their inner identity? Is gender something we are or something we do? Is our expression of gender inborn or does it develop as we grow? Are the traditional binary male and female gender roles relevant in an increasingly fluid and flexible world? This intelligent, stimulating volume assesses the connections between gender, psychology, culture and sexuality, and reveals how individual and social attitudes have evolved over the centuries.

In the series Lotus, Max Pinckers and Quinten De Bruyn document the world of transsexuals in Thailand. The gender crisis that the so-called ladyboys face is transformed into a visual metaphor about the identity crisis that contemporary documentary photography currently encounters, when it dares to reflect upon itself critically, and confront its paradoxes. The documentary photographer that captures reality as 'a fly on the wall' can't deny his or her directive and manipulative role any longer. The anonymity, the seeming absence, is merely a pose. The tableaux that the photographer captures are not lies, but enfold themselves within the studio that he or she creates from reality.

This book draws together for the first time the self-portraits of French Surrealist artist Claude Cahun (1894–1954) and British contemporary artist Gillian Wearing (b.1963). Although they lived almost one hundred years apart, their work shares similar themes: gender, identity, masquerade and performance. Beginning with a visit to Jersey, where Cahun lived and worked until her death, and where the Cahun archive is housed, Wearing’s journey of discovery is examined in this beautiful book.

An unbridled celebration of a life beyond guilt and expiation As sweet as raspberry ripple, as tempting as popcorn. Welcome to the seductive pictures of Pierre et Gilles. Again and again they show people in kitschy scenarios against a background of flowers and hearts. When they are not snapping portraits of the well-known - most of whom are close friends like Marc Almond or Nina Hagen - and not-so-known, they photograph themselves. Bizarre, and full of obscure significance, the photographs are reminiscent of stills from film melodramas. They are always colourful and presented with beguiling polish. They plunder the repertoire of historical presentation as though they were leafing through a collection of fabrics, and assume identities as though they were part of a mail-order catalogue. Now the latest and most comprehensive collection of the works of these two photographers can be presented to the public - in a format designed by the artists themselves. In matt skin-colour, with a golden edging, the embossed cover is reminiscent of a quilted counterpane and promises a cuddly experience within. Once between the covers one can frolic at will in a soft, artificial world of pictures. This saccharine collection of kitsch encompasses all aspects of homosexuality and offers them in an appetising form even to those who abhor them. A straight challenge is issued to all readers to participate - at least with their eyes - in this unbridled celebration of a life beyond guilt and expiation.

Since the #MeToo movement, the masculine exercise of power has been closely scrutinised. The focus on 'toxic' masculinity impacts our perception of male sexuality, which substantially influences the self-image and self-esteem of men. Men are being shamed by others, and they also feel ashamed. This book explores both positions, examining the representation of male sexuality, nudity, fatherhood, violence, rape, fascism and virility, and men and war from male as well as female perspectives. It presents artworks that deal with the intricacies and contradictions of these sociocultural constructs and realities, and combines scholarly essays with short stories and personal testimonies. - Exhibition: H401, Amsterdam, The Netherlands (23.10.2020 - 31.01.2021). Shame! and Maculinity onderzoekt deze beide standpunten.

Revolution Is Love: A Year of Black Trans Liberation is the powerful and celebratory visual record of a contemporary activist movement in New York City, and a moving testament to the enduring power of photography in activism, advocacy, and community. In June 2020, after a Black trans woman in Missouri and a Black trans man in Florida were killed just weeks apart, activists Qween Jean and Joela Rivera returned to the historic Stonewall Inn - site of the 1969 riots that launched the modern gay rights movement - where they initiated weekly actions known thereafter as the Stonewall Protests. Brought together by the urgent need to center Black trans and queer lives within the Black Lives Matter movement, a vibrant and radical community emerged. Over the following year, the Stonewall Protests brought together thousands of people across communities and social movements to gather in solidarity, resistance, and communion. Each Thursday was an invitation for protests, healing, and celebration - whether through marches, voguing balls, or vigil - and a living testament to love in revolution. This book gathers twenty-four photographers who participated in these actions to share images and words on the demonstrations and their community at large, preserving this legacy as it unfolded. Through photographs, interviews, and text, Revolution Is Love celebrates the power of shared joy and struggle in trans community and liberation.

"The Landing Strip is a photographic series by artist Kader Attia that documents the lives of a group of Algerian Transgender sex workers living in Paris in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Focusing on the group’s shared intimacy, and taken of over a period of roughly two years, Attia sought to capture and present the real lives of those in the community. The title of the series is the name given by the women to the Boulevard on which they work. This long straight road, which separates the centre of Paris from its suburbs, resembles an airport runway. Featuring more than 140 illustrations that trace the events from day into night, and an essay by Tarek El-Ariss, Associate Professor and chair of Middle Eastern Studies at Dartmouth University, this book is an honest and personal insight into the lives and relationships of a group on the periphery of society."
