This study examines the role of trace metals, specifically cobalt (Co) and nickel (Ni), in enhancing biogas production from the digestion of organic matter. The research highlights how these metals can improve methane production and process stability, while also increasing the efficiency of substrate utilization. It explores the chemical speciation of these metals and their bioavailability, particularly in relation to their association with sulfides. Laboratory-scale biogas reactors were used to assess the effects of trace metal additions, revealing that Co and Ni were essential for maintaining process stability and enhancing methane production. The study also analyzes the microbial community structure and its response to Co and Ni availability, noting shifts in methanogenic populations under metal deficiency conditions. Intended for researchers and professionals in environmental science and renewable energy, the work provides insights into optimizing biogas production processes.
