Abstract

This master’s thesis delves into the field of space nulling interferometry, a promising technique for direct exoplanet detection and characterization. The work begins with an introduction to nulling interferometry, followed by a comprehensive theoretical background that lays the foundation for understanding the principles and limitations of this method. A review of previous space mission concepts, such as the Darwin mission, as well as currently existing ground-based facilities, highlight the advancements and lessons learned in the field throughout the years. This thesis aims in enhancing the understanding and application of nulling interferometry by the development in chapter 4 of an advanced analysis tool to assess interference quality. Coupling the results of the ray-tracing software CodeV and postprocess capabilities of MATLAB, this tool performs detailed tolerancing and sensitivity analysis, essential for optimizing the design and performance of future interferometric instruments. The tool was validated through a series of MonteCarlo simulations in chapter 5 and sensitivity analysis in chapter 6, demonstrating its effectiveness in identifying and mitigating potential sources of error.
The results underscore the importance of precise optical design, calibration, and correction mechanisms in achieving high-quality interference. This thesis provides a robust framework for future research and development in nulling interferometry such as precise tolerancing and optimisation of a nulling interferometer optical design, contributing to the ongoing quest for discovering and studying exoplanets.

Abstract

The aim of this master thesis is to perform an optimization of the Narrow Field of view Imager (NFI)
of the GLIDE mission (NASA) and to study its tolerancing. The optimization process is developed
around a geometrical problematic that appears between the first mirror of the telescope, the detector
and the light path. Indeed, the first design of the NFI created during phase A of the mission showed
that there was a collision between those components. The main goal is to solve this problematic and to
develop an optimization process to have the most optimal optical system. The design created will have
to respect the requirements of the mission. The second goal is to study the tolerancing of this system.
A sensitivity matrix is built in order to see which geometrical parameter are the most sensitive in the
optical system. This will also allow to define a tolerance for each dimensions of the NFI telescope.

Abstract

In this book, I will discuss only the most common errors that appear on engineering drawings and the basic usage and understanding of the most frequently used drawings. All drawings will contain errors, but if you can eliminate many of those errors before the engineering design checker or your supervisor reviews your drawing, it will go through much easier. Your reputation is at stake! Your supervisor and the engineering design checker will see everyone's work and know their errors. They know your weak areas and who produces good work and who doesn't. It is helpful to know what they look for--or should be looking for.

Abstract

Additive manufacturing (AM) is one of the manufacturing processes that warrants the attention of industrialists, researchers, and scientists. AM has the ability to fabricate materials to produce parts with complex shapes without any theoretical restrictions combined with added functionalities. Selective laser melting (SLM), also known as laser-based powder bed processing (LPBF), is one of the main AM process that can be used to fabricate wide variety of materials that are Al-, Ti-, Fe-, Ni-, Co-, W-, Ag-, and Au-based, etc. However, several challenges need to be addressed systematically, such as development of new materials that suit the SLM process conditions so the process capabilities can be fully used to produce new properties in these materials. Other issues in the field are the lack of microstructure–property correlations, premature failure, etc. Accordingly, this Special Issue (book) focuses mainly on the microstructure-correlation in three different alloys: AlSi10Mg, Ti6Al4V, and 304L stainless steel, where six articles are presented. Hence, this Special Issue outlines microstructure–property correlations in the SLM processed materials and provides a value addition to the field of AM.

Abstract

Digital Twins in Industry is a compilation of works by authors with specific emphasis on industrial applications. Much of the research on digital twins has been conducted by the academia in both theoretical considerations and laboratory-based prototypes. Industry, while taking the lead on larger scale implementations of Digital Twins (DT) using sophisticated software, is concentrating on dedicated solutions that are not within the reach of the average-sized industries. This book covers 11 chapters of various implementations of DT. It provides an insight for companies who are contemplating the adaption of the DT technology, as well as researchers and senior students in exploring the potential of DT and its associated technologies.
