Doelstelling: Deze scriptie bestaat uit een vertaling en literair-technische analyse van twee kortverhalen geschreven door Raymond Carver. In de literair-technische analyse wordt naast de aspecten tijd, vertellen en focalisatie ook de thematiek besproken. Middelen of methode: De vertaalde kortverhalen komen uit de verhalenbundel Cathedral van Raymond Carver, die in 1983 verscheen. De literair-technische analyse van de kortverhalen stoelt grotendeels op Narrative Fiction: Contemporary Poetics van Rimmon-Kenan. Er wordt ook verwezen naar A Dictionary Of Stylistics van Wales, Style In Fiction van Leech & Short en Style And Structure In Literature van Fowler. Resultaten: Uit de analyse en vergelijking van beide kortverhalen blijkt dat de aspecten tijd, vertellen en focalisatie op een verschillende manier worden uitgewerkt. Toch wordt grotendeels hetzelfde effect beoogd: door een sobere en selectieve verteltrant en een beperkte en gerichte focalisatie moet de lezer veel zelf afleiden en interpreteren. Beide verhalen hebben op het vlak van thematiek heel wat gemeen, vooral communicatie blijkt centraal te staan.
