Abstract

The Special Issue contains ten research papers, three of which review papers. It is a miscellaneous composition encompassing several applications where metal oxides play a key role. Some papers also give insights into novel synthesis methods and processes aiming to reduce negative environmental impacts and increase materials and process efficiency, thus also covering a broader concern of sustainability issues. The topics covered in this issues are: transparent conductive oxides, ceramic composites for tool applications, oxides nanoparticles for A-TIG welding, critical raw materials saving, metallurgical waste treatment, oxides for high temperature applications, nanostructured oxides and composites for gas sensing and desulfuration, and metal oxides sorbents for CO2 capture.

Abstract

Most metallic components and structures are subjected, in service, to random or variable amplitude loadings. There are many examples: vehicles subjected to loadings and vibrations caused by road irregularity and engine, structures exposed to wind, off-shore platforms undergoing wave-loadings, and so on. Just like constant amplitude loadings, random and variable amplitude loadings can make fatigue cracks initiate and propagate, even up to catastrophic failures. Engineers faced with the problem of estimating the structural integrity and the fatigue strength of metallic structures, or their propensity to fracture, usually make use of theoretical, numerical, or experimental approaches. This reprint collects a series of recent scientific contributions aimed at providing an up-to-date overview of approaches and case studies—theoretical, numerical or experimental—on several topics in the field of fracture, fatigue strength, and the structural integrity of metallic components subjected to random or variable amplitude loadings.

Abstract

The formulation of coated composite materials is an important field of research around the world today. Coated composite materials include inhomogeneous and anisotropic materials. These materials are formulated by an amalgamate minimum of two or more materials that accommodate different properties. These materials have a vast field of appealing applications that encourage scientists to work on them. Due to their unique properties, such as their strength, liability, swiftness, and low cost, they are used as promising candidates for reliable applications in various fields, such as biomedical, engineering, energy devices, wastewater treatment, and agriculture. Different types of composite materials have had a noticeable impact in these fields already, such as glass, plastic, and, most promisingly, metal oxide nanoparticles.
