La perspective d'une troisième révolution industrielle - que l'auteur appelle de ses vœux - est née de la certitude que les grandes révolutions économiques de l'histoire ont lieu lorsque de nouvelles technologies de communication convergent avec de nouveaux systèmes d'énergie. La deuxième révolution industrielle se meurt : on ne peut en effet ignorer l'impasse que constitue le recours au pétrole et aux énergies fossiles, au risque de courir à notre perte. Il est temps de s'acheminer vers la troisième révolution industrielle, dont les piliers sont principalement l'utilisation des énergies renouvelables et Internet. Dans un futur proche, les humains devraient générer leur propre énergie verte et la partager, comme ils créent et partagent déjà leurs propres informations sur Internet. S'attachant à définir les mécanismes nécessaires à la mise en œuvre de cette troisième révolution industrielle et les défis qu'elle suppose, Jeremy Rifkin affirme qu'il est possible de faire de cette vision une réalité pour toute l'Europe et un espoir tangible pour le reste du monde.
