In het kader van de broodnodige energietransitie, waarbij het totale energieverbruik de komende jaren sterk moet dalen en de resterende energieconsumptie maximaal moet worden ingevuld door hernieuwbare energiebronnen, is in Vlaanderen een belangrijke rol weggelegd voor windenergie. Evenwel leert de praktijk dat de vergunning van windturbines niet altijd van een leien dakje loopt. Naast de omstandigheid dat dergelijke projecten vaak op lokale weerstand botsen, vinden vergunningverlenende overheden ook niet altijd hun weg in het kluwen van regels en rechtspraak, waardoor de deur naar juridische procedures wagenwijd open staat.

Hernieuwbare energie zit duidelijk in de lift. Waar zowat 10 jaar geleden enkel de zogenaamde «geitenwollensokkendrager. met hernieuwbare energie bezig waren, is de sector nu «big busines. geworden.
