Abstract

Businesspersons--including engineers, managers, and technoprenuers-- are trained and drilled to make things happen. Part of their practice is to guide others on building monuments of success and to make difficult decisions along the way. However, they will all realize that the decisions they make eventually determine the chances they take, and that they are all fraught with uncertainty. This book is developed to give businesspersons the opportunity to learn operational risk management from a systems perspective and be able to readily put this learning into action, whether in the classroom or the office, coupled with their experience and respective discipline.

Abstract

This book makes the case for a systems approach to small-scale community development projects. It looks more specifically at the application of one branch of systems science, called system dynamics, to develop conceptual models of small-scale communities and address specific issues they might be facing at different scales. A systems approach recognizes that, by definition, communities are complex adaptive systems consisting of multiple subsystems and parts (e.g., individuals, institutions, and infrastructure) that are interconnected, are driven by some purpose, follow certain rules, and interact with each other and with their surrounding environment. In order to address community issues and problems, complexity and uncertainty must be embraced and dealt with. This book emphasizes and shows how to include a system- and complexity-aware approach in the different phases of small-scale community project management. Adopting this approach comes with unique challenges such as dealing with ill-defined problems, considering uncertainty, recognizing that no unique and best solutions to complex problems exist, and accepting satisficing (i.e., good enough) solutions. This book emphasizes the need for community development practitioners to integrate in all stages of their projects: participation, systems thinking, continuous reflection-in-action, and a combination of critical and creative tools. At the same time, practitioners must ensure that they deliver solutions that are sound from a technical point of view (i.e., done right), adaptable to the cultural, economic, and social context in which they work (i.e., rightly done), and developed for the right reasons.

Abstract

Most energy systems are suboptimized. Businesses and consumers are so focused on initial costs that they underestimate the effect of operating the energy system over its life. This suboptimization creates a fantastic opportunity to not only make a wise decision financially but also reduces the environmental impact of energy systems. There are three simple tools, known to all mechanical engineers, that when added to traditional thermodynamics enable an engineer to find the true optimum of an energy system. In this concise textbook, you will be equipped with these tools and will understand how they are applied to cooling systems. The target audiences for this textbook are mechanical engineering students in their first semester of thermodynamics all the way to engineers with up to 20 years of experience. First semester thermodynamic students will benefit the most from Appendices A and C in Chapter 1. The rest of Chapter 1 is written at a level where any undergraduate mechanical engineering student who is taking heat transfer will be able to quickly assimilate the knowledge. The textbook also has the depth to handle the latent load, which will provide the practicing engineer with the tools necessary to handle the complexity of real cooling systems.

Abstract

It has been confirmed that the number of cases and the death toll of COVID-19 are continuing to rise in many countries around the globe. Governments around the world have been struggling with containing and reducing the socioeconomic impacts of COVID-19; however, their respective responses have not been consistent. Aggressive measures imposed by some governments have resulted in a complete lockdown that has disrupted all facets of life and poses massive health, social, and financial impacts. Other countries, however, are taking a more wait-and-see approach in an attempt to maintain business as usual. Collectively, these challenges reflect a super wicked problem that places immense pressure on economies and societies and requires the strategic management of health systems to avoid overwhelming them—this has been linked to the public mantra of ‘flattening the curve’, which acknowledges that while the pandemic cannot be stopped, its impact can be regulated so that the number of cases at any given time is not beyond the capacity of the health system. Dynamic simulation modelling is a framework that facilitates the understanding/exploring of complex problems, of searching for and finding the best option(s) from all practical solutions where time dynamics are essential. The papers in this book provide research insights into this super wicked problem and case studies exploring the interactions between social, economic, environmental, and health factors through the use of a systems approach.
