This Companion offers an introduction to Reformed theology, one of the most historically important, ecumenically active, and currently generative traditions of doctrinal enquiry, by way of reflecting upon its origins, its development, and its significance. The first part, Theological Topics, indicates the distinct array of doctrinal concerns which gives coherence over time to the identity of this tradition in all its diversity. The second part, Theological Figures, explores the life and work of a small number of theologians who have not only worked within this tradition, but have constructively shaped and inspired it in vital ways. The final part, Theological Contexts, considers the ways in which the resultant Reformed sensibilities in theology have had a marked impact both upon theological and ecclesiastical landscapes in different places and upon the wider societal landscapes of history. The result is a fascinating and compelling guide to this dynamic and vibrant theological tradition.

"Tobias Graßmann nimmt das dogmatische Grundproblem der verbindlichen Lehre der Kirche, ihres Umfangs und ihrer Geltung aus lutherischer Perspektive in den Blick. Dabei sind die sechs Kernkapitel seines Buches als einzelne Fallstudien lesbar, aber dennoch eng aufeinander bezogen. Eine erste Annährung erfolgt dabei bewusst aus der Außenperspektive kulturanthropologischer und soziologischer Religionstheorie (C. Geertz, P. Bourdieu). Anschließend rekonstruiert Graßmann mit den reformatorischen Bekenntnissen und dem Barocktheologen J.C. Dannhauer zwei wichtige Etappen der Herausbildung eines charakteristisch-lutherischen Lehrverständnisses, bevor er anhand der jüngsten Entwürfe von E. Herms und G.A. Lindbeck zeigt, dass sich das Lehrproblem in der Gegenwart trotz einer gewissen Lehrvergessenheit in Kirche und Theologie keinesfalls erledigt hat. Als Scharnier dient eine Untersuchung zur Kerygmatheologie R. Bultmanns und ihrer Wirkungsgeschichte, die auf einen bislang meist ausgeblendeten Faktor für die modernen Transformationen des protestantischen Lehrverständnisses hinweist. Durch Integration kulturanthropologischer, soziologischer und philosophischer Einsichten in eine dogmatische Leitperspektive entfaltet das Schlusskapitel ein agonistisches Lehrverständnis, das das Augenmerk weniger auf den Wortlaut einzelner Lehraussagen als auf die dynamischen Prozesse der Artikulation, Offizialisierung und Kritik kirchlicher Lehre lenkt. Immer erscheint dabei die Einbettung in die gelebte Frömmigkeit als Grundzug solcher Lehre, die tatsächlich Geltung beanspruchen kann und nicht nur abstrakte Norm bleibt."
