This edited volume explores how journalists and other media actors apply personalized frames and narratives, both visual and verbal, in representing and conveying health issues. Today's feature journalism in weekend editions of major newspapers frequently communicate very personal experiences, often visualized through a series of portrayed people's process of growing up, accompanied by images gathered from private photo albums. An expanding TV genre follows the journalist as a protagonist trying to come to terms with e.g. their own body, sexual orientation or experiences of suicide in close relations. In social media, journalists present their news even more subjectively and interpretatively compared to legacy media. Stories on lifestyle diseases, mental health or infectious diseases are unavoidably connected to broader practices of health policies, workplace strategies and legislation. Instead of either celebrating or deploring the tendency towards more personalized health journalism, the contributions to this volume explore how individuals and exemplars are represented in journalistic media, and what these representations imply about people's understanding of - and participation in - important health issues in society. The data gathered and examined in this volume are from the Nordic countries. The Nordic countries represent an interesting case study in media regulation globally, combining robust protections of press freedom with a significant level of regulation - reflecting the assumption that media are a social institution and not simply a private business. The Nordic countries are characterized by a high level of media distribution and consumption, both when it comes to legacy and social media. In this region, news media are also known to be innovative and resourceful, paving the way for new genres and formats. Another important factor is the high level of public health systems and social security legislation in the Nordic countries, which also makes the Nordic countries an interesting field of study.

Taking a cue from Erving Goffman's classic work, 'Asylums', Tia DeNora develops a novel interdisciplinary framework for music, health and wellbeing. Considering health and illness both in medical contexts and in the often-overlooked realm of everyday life, DeNora argues that these identities are by no means mutually exclusive.

Difficile d’échapper à l’huile de palme : elle est omniprésente dans les aliments issus de l’industrie agroalimentaire – biscuits, friandises, pâtisseries, lait en poudre, condiments, plats cuisinés, glaces, pizzas – ainsi que dans de nombreux autres biens de consommation courante comme les cosmétiques et les agrocarburants. Pourquoi ? Parce que ses propriétés mécaniques et thermiques lui garantissent une onctuosité à toutes températures qu’aucune autre matière grasse végétale ne peut égaler. Et ses propriétés nutritives ? Elles sont mises en cause de façon insistante par de nombreuses ONG et agences pour la protection de la santé publique du fait de sa haute teneur en acides gras saturés, synonyme d’obésité chez les consommateurs ayant peu accès aux produits frais. Et ce n’est peut-être pas le plus grave. La culture intensive du palmier à huile, une plante originaire d’Afrique, est si lucrative qu’elle a envahi toute la ceinture tropicale de la planète, avec des effets ravageurs sur les biotopes, la biodiversité et les populations autochtones. En Indonésie, en Malaisie, en Afrique centrale ou en Amérique latine, on défriche des millions d’hectares de forêt primaire pour y substituer des plantations immenses de palmiers à huile tirés au cordeau. Souvent à la faveur de gouvernements corrompus, les fournisseurs locaux des multinationales agroalimentaires exploitent ces terres en faisant appel à une main-d’oeuvre bon marché, paupérisée par la ruine de leur mode de subsistance traditionnel. Le sujet est quasi tabou : les « agros » et leurs lobbyistes veillent et n’hésitent pas à assigner les journalistes trop curieux ou trop critiques, tant le « business » de l’huile de palme est sensible aux opinions des consommateurs.
