Abstract

This volume examines the stylistic characteristics of threatening and abusive letters by right-wing extremists as well as left-wing extremist position papers and claims to responsibility. It applies qualitative and quantitative analytical methods to identify and describe the differences and similarities between these text types. The findings facilitate understanding of these text types and provide new perspectives for forensic author analysis.

Abstract

simultaneously address questions of 'text' - formal issues central to the study of film and literature - and 'context' - ideological concerns crucial to late twentieth-century Spain. She examines three themes of particular importance to contemporary Spanish culture - the recuperation of history, the negotiation of the rural and the urban, and the representation of gender - and considers the related stylistic issues of the affinities between cinematic expression and nostalgia, the city and phallocentrism. The study concludes with an analysis of the formal question of the narrator in film and literature, through an assessment of Bunuel's previously unacknowledged stylistic debt to Galdos as manifested in his adaptations of Nazarin and Tristana.

Abstract

Jacobus Kloppers, an eminent composer, organist, pedagogue, and scholar, significantly contributed to musicological and organ teaching in South Africa and Canada and, in the latter context, art music, and liturgical composition. A Passage of Nostalgia – The Life and Work of Jacobus Kloppers, as a symbolic gesture, constitute recognition of his work both in South Africa and Canada. This publication is unique in that, apart from relevant disciplinary perspectives, biographical and autobiographical narrative, and anecdote, all constitute a necessary means through which the authors illuminate Kloppers’ compositional process and its creative outcomes. In this regard, Kloppers generously dedicated his time to the project to make information on his life and work available, often in complex ways. This retrospective input supports the work offered as an authentic, self-reflective recounting of a life of dedicated service in music. The construct of nostalgia as an overarching theme to this volume on some level denotes Kloppers’ position of cultural and religious ‘insidedness’ and ‘outsidedness’. However, apart from representing a return to a lost and challenging past, the composer’s creative work affirms his individuality, sense of artistic self, and propensity for spiritual acceptance and tolerance. Moreover, nostalgia in his oeuvre takes on importance as a rhetorical artistic practice by which continuity is as central as discontinuity.

Abstract

Abstract

"It seems painfully obvious to note that novels are composed one word at a time. Yet very few works of literary theory or criticism explore how words actually work in a literary context, how (some) writers effectively employ and deploy words (and the syllables that comprise them) to achieve stylistic effects that can heighten, distract from, make memorable, enliven, or deepen the experience of reading. Distinct from plot, theme, or character, the ways of the word are multiple, deviant, and convergent by turns, and in this book, Garrett Stewart charts some of these ways across dozens of works by authors classic to contemporary, in poetry as well as prose."--

Abstract

This tapestry of primary sources is an essential primer on sculpture and its makers. Modern Sculpture presents a selection of manifestos, documents, statements, articles, and interviews from more than ninety sculptors, including a diverse selection of contemporary sculptors. With this book, editor Douglas Dreishpoon defers to artists, whose varied points of view illuminate sculpture's transformation--from object to action, concept to phenomenon--over the course of more than a century. Chapters arranged in chronological sequences highlight dominant stylistic, philosophical, and thematic threads uniting kindred groups. The result is an artist-centric history of sculpture as a medium of consequence and character.

Abstract

Although some of Henry James's contemporary critics deemed him just short of a great writer, history has elevated him to indisputable preeminence in the American canon. Linda Simon chronicles and analyzes James criticism beginning with contemporary newspaper and magazine reviews and ending with current academic criticism. The story begins in the 1870s, when critics saw James's works as mirrors of American identity and sought to establish him in the nation's evolving canon. James himself worked to secure that place with his prefaces to the standard edition of his works; Simon analyzes criticism about those prefaces. She also shows how James's reputation became contested after his death: praised by some critics for psychological insight and stylistic innovation, he was dismissed by others as socially and politically irrelevant. But beginning in the 1940s, such critics as Trilling, Rahv, Leavis, and, most influentially, Leon Edel secured James's place at the forefront of the American canon. More recently, James scholarship has focused on sexuality and gender, race and morality, and the nature of consciousness; critical trends Simon also considers. This book, the only comprehensive overview of James criticism over the past 140 years, helps readers understand the paths that that criticism has taken and how scholars and critics have built upon past work. Linda Simon is Professor of English at Skidmore College and Editor-in-Chief of 'William James Studies.' Her books include 'Genuine Reality: A Life of William James,' which was a 'New York Times' Notable Book of 1998.
