Abstract

Addressing structures, this book presents a classic discipline in a modern setting by combining illustrated examples with insights into the solutions. It is the fruit of the author’s many years of teaching the subject and of just as many years of research into the design of optimal structures. Although intended for an advanced level of instruction it has an undergraduate course at its core. Further, the book was written with the advantage of having massive computer power in the background, an aspect which changes the entire approach to many engineering disciplines and in particular to structures. This paradigm shift has dislodged the force (flexibility) method from its former prominence and paved the way for the displacement (stiffness) method, despite the multitude of linear equations it spawns. In this book, however, both methods are taught: the force method offers a perfect vehicle for understanding structural behavior, bearing in mind that it is the displacement method which does the heavy number crunching. As a rule the book keeps things as simple as possible, conveying the basic ideas and refraining from lengthy calculations wherever possible. Further, it endeavors to unify the approach, showing that whatever applies to simple springs is equally valid for intricate frames. In addition to various design considerations, it also addresses several topics relating to optimal structures that will be of interest to students and teachers of structures.

Abstract

This revision and work book offers a very specific concept for learning the finite element method applying it to problems from statics of: It skips all the classical derivations and focusses only the essential final results. Based on these `essentials', fully solved example problems are presented. To facilitate the initial learning process, the authors compiled 10 recommended steps for a linear finite element solution procedure (`hand calculation') and all the solved examples follow this simple scheme. These 10 recommended steps help engineering students to master the finite ele ment method and guide through fundamental standard problems, although there are neither 10 recommended steps for real-life engineering problems nor 10 standard problems that cover all possible problems that a young engineer may face during his first years of professional work.  This revision course accompanies the textbook "Computational Statics and Dyn amics: An Introduction Based on the Finite Element Method" by the same authors.

Abstract

This volume on multiscaling has been motivated by the advancement of nano-technology in the past four decades. In particular, nano-electronics has paved the way to show that the behavior of nano-size bodies are not only different from macro-size bodies but they do not obey the same physical laws. There appears to be a mesoscopic region which separates the laws of quantum physics and continuum mechanics. A gap has been left in the full range of scaling from macro to nano. Micro-manipulation can be made more effective if the atomic and molecular scale activities can be identified more precisely with the use specific objectives. In this respect, material science has already benefited by positioning and structuring of nanometer-scale particles to arrive at the desired macroscopic material properties. The idea has been implemented to tailor-make structural materials for the Boeing 787 to better accommodate non-uniform stress and strain at different locations of the aircraft. Explored are also the possibility of coaxing DNA-based organisms such as viruses to improve performance of batteries, solar cells, fabrics, paints and other kinds of materials. The potential of assembling bio-molecules to build electronic components is also in the planning. The manipulation of molecules and atoms has been regarded as a common base for both material and life science. Quantum and continuum mechanics are being applied side by side for exploring the behavior of small and large objects moving at fast and slow speed.
