This book is the attempt to bring - through the study of the written sources - one of the many faces of the complex Mongol history to its historical dimension. It concentrates on the Mongol dominion in Caucasia, considered as the area that goes from the Azov Sea down to modern Georgia. The period of the Mongol dominion was not the unique occasion during which sedentaries cultures and nomad civilizations came to interact; but it was only after this event that Caucasia underwent a coherent power of a united political system which enclosed in itself the character of both the social models. The genesis of this process and its results are the main object of this book. Il volume intende riportare, attraverso lo studio delle fonti, un aspetto della complessa vicenda mongola alla sua dimensione storica. L'opera si concentra sulla dominazione mongola nella Caucasia, qui considerata come l'area che dal Mar d'Azov scende a sud fino a includere la Georgia attuale. Il periodo della dominazione mongola non fu la prima occasione durante la quale culture sedentarie e civiltà nomadi si trovarono a interagire; è pero in seguito a questo evento che la Caucasia subì un potere coerente da parte di un sistema organizzato che racchiuse in sé i caratteri di entrambi i modelli; la genesi di tale processo e i suoi risultati costituiscono l'oggetto fondamentale del lavoro.

This volume investigates how historiography became a “profession” from the 13th to the 15th century. As a genre, historiography is difficult to define: inspired by Cicero’s rhetorical rules, humanists were the first to elaborate a specific ars. In doing so, they adapted rhetoric to a new ethical sense of humanitas. Several contributors to this book have already discussed in previous works of theirs the linguistic and rhetorical choices that some important historians made. See, for instance, Tra storiografia e retorica: prospettive nel basso medioevo italiano, ed. M. Zabbia, in «Reti Medievali. Rivista», 19 (2018), especially the papers by Paolo Garbini, Marino Zabbia, and Fulvio Delle Donne. On this occasion, they pay attention to the authors’ direct interventions: their self-representation and reflections on methodological issues reveal a new consciousness, which gradually developed over the centuries. This volume is a part of the PRIN project (the acronym standing for Project of Relevant National Interest) titled “A.L.I.M. (Digital Archive of the Italian Latinity in the Middle Ages: http://www.alim.dfll.univr.it): Practices and theory for computer archiving and philology applied to medieval texts”, which Professor Fulvio Delle Donne coordinates at the University of Basilicata.

À partir de la fin du VIIIe siècle, les Vikings font une entrée en scène fracassante en Occident. Ils s’aventurent également sur les terres de l’Atlantique nord ou encore vers l’Orient. Cette irruption doit être replacée dans un contexte qui voit l’essor des échanges entre les pays riverains des mers septentrionales et les transformations propres aux sociétés scandinaves.L’expansion des peuples nordiques a pris des aspects multiformes dans les différents espaces où les Vikings exercèrent leur activité, et, si la violence y eut sa part, cet ouvrage montre combien les processus d’intégration et d’acculturation comme les influences réciproques ont été nombreux et féconds.
