Abstract

This book explains how to use intravitreal steroids optimally in the management of patients with intraocular inflammation (uveitis) and macular edema. The rationale for this treatment approach is first explained by examining the pathophysiology of these disease entities, with particular attention to the major role of inflammatory processes. Devices for the delivery of steroids to the eye are discussed, and guidance provided on the role of imaging studies before, during, and after steroid therapy. The value of different steroidal approaches is then considered in detail. Other topics addressed include the use of steroids as a surgical adjunct and within a combination strategy. Uveitis and macular edema are common sight-threatening diseases or complications of diabetes and retinal vein occlusion for which no adequate treatment was available until recently. Both trainees and practitioners will find Intravitreal Steroids to be an invaluable aid in combating these blinding diseases.

Abstract

This book focuses on hormones, and on how they are produced in very diverse regions of the body in humans and animals. Hormones exhibiting the same synthesis pathways are not only found in vertebrates, but also in insects, shellfish, spiders, mollusks, and they were present evenat the time of metazoan diversification. The book discusses the different classes of hormones: protein/peptides hormones, steroids and juvenile hormones and hormones like catecholamines, thyroid hormones and melatonin. It also discusses the different types of hormone receptors, the majority of which are heptahelical G-protein coupled receptors or nuclear receptors. Particular attention is paid to the organs where hormones are synthesized, with specifics on production and release, while a dedicated chapter details hormonal regulation in systems ranging from the very simple to the highly complex. The remarkable kinetics of hormone production is also shown, and the book is rounded out by chapters on the evolution of the endocrine system, the genetics of endocrine diseases and doping.

Abstract

A fundamental goal of neuroscience is to understand how hormones modulate neural circuits and behavior. Hearing and Hormones reviews the growing literature showing that hormones can regulate auditory physiology and anatomy, and the perception of acoustic signals across a broad range of animal taxa, including humans. · Hearing and Hormones: Paying Homage to the Comparative Approach by Andrew H. Abstract

This book covers the subject of steroid profiling for the diagnosis of disorders of steroidogenesis. Each chapter provides at least one case study for each of the listed disorders in order to illustrate the subtle and nuanced details required for the diagnosis of these conditions. General information is also given about the biology of these disorders and explanations of typical laboratory findings are provided. This book describes the steroid profile features and its interpretation, in addition to describing the pathophysiology, clinical indications for investigation, general endocrine investigations and genetic considerations for each of the congenital and acquired conditions. A valuable tool for day-to-day clinical and laboratory investigations of adrenal pathologies and disorders of steroidogenesis, as well as providing impetus to further study.

Abstract

This practical resource provides the latest evidence, management strategies and recommendations for the treatment of disorders of the adrenal glands, including related physiology, genetics and pharmacology. This book is divided into three thematic sections. The first covers adrenal physiology, presenting adrenal zonation and development, the regulation of steroidogenesis, and the pharmacology of glucocortisoids. Part two discusses the genetics and pathophysiology of a number of adrenal disorders, including autoimmune Addison’s disease, congenital adrenal hyperplasia, primary aldosteronism, adrenocortical tumors and hyperplasias, and pheochromocytomas and paragangliomas. The final section presents the latest diagnostic and management strategies for these disorders, addressing adrenal insufficiency, adrenal Cushing’s Syndrome and aldosteronism, among others. Over the past twenty years, our understanding of disorders of the adrenal glands has been altered and deepened. Providing a much-needed update to the literature, Adrenal Disorders: Physiology, Pathophysiology and Treatment will be an important resource for both academic and clinical endocrinologists working with the adrenal glands and managing patients with adrenal disorders.

Abstract

Rapid actions of sex steroids play a critical role in mediating the biological outcome of target tissues. This book reviews the importance of these non-genomic effects in initiation and progression of breast and prostate cancers. Particular emphasis is placed on discussing how rapid steroid actions not only impact disease development and response to conventional therapies for these two types of cancers, but have also led to the identification of potential new therapeutic targets and treatment possibilities for cancer patients. The book reviews the fundamental basis of target development and the current status of these studies, which are providing valuable insights in key areas of breast and prostate cancers. Abstract
