In den 1980er Jahren entwickelte sich in oppositionellen Kreisen der Volksrepublik Polen ein unabhängiger Publikationsumlauf außerhalb der staatlichen Zensur, der sogenannte »Zweite Umlauf« ( drugi obieg ). Dazu gehörten nicht nur Texte in illegal erscheinenden Büchern und Untergrundzeitschriften. Es wurden auch nachgeahmte Briefmarken und Poststempel veröffentlicht, die jedoch keine Frankaturfunktion hatten. Die Grafiker der Unabhängigen Post verbildlichten in Form von visuellen Kurzbotschaften Themen des oppositionellen kulturellen Gedächtnisses, die der Standortbestimmung der Oppositionsbewegung dienten. Der Erlös aus dem Verkauf der Untergrundbriefmarken floss weitestgehend in die Unterstützung oppositioneller Aktivitäten zurück. Zudem trugen sie als Sammelobjekt zur Bestätigung einer Gemeinschaft von Gleichgesinnten bei.
