Abstract

Space geodetic techniques, e.g., global navigation satellite systems (GNSS), Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI), satellite gravimetry and altimetry, and GNSS Reflectometry & Radio Occultation, are capable of measuring small changes of the Earths shape, rotation, and gravity field, as well as mass changes in the Earth system with an unprecedented accuracy. This book is devoted to presenting recent results and development in space geodetic techniques and sciences, including GNSS, VLBI, gravimetry, geoid, geodetic atmosphere, geodetic geophysics and geodetic mass transport associated with the ocean, hydrology, cryosphere and solid-Earth. This book provides a good reference for geodetic techniques, engineers, scientists as well as user community.

Abstract

"The author-a leading theoretical cosmologist-expands on his widely acclaimed lecture notes in this self-contained textbook, suitable for the advanced undergraduate or starting graduate level. Presenting the key theoretical foundations of cosmology and describing the observations that have turned the subject into a precision science, the author keeps the student in mind on every page by explaining concepts step-by-step, in an approachable manner. After describing the dynamics of the homogeneous universe, the book traces the evolution of small density fluctuations, which were created quantum-mechanically during inflation and are today observed in the cosmic microwave background and the large-scale structure of the universe. The book is ideally suited as a course companion or for self-study. With all necessary background material covered, students have everything they need to establish an unrivalled understanding of the subject. Complete with many worked examples, figures, and homework problems, this textbook is a definitive resource for advanced students in physics, astronomy and applied mathematics"--

Abstract

This document is the continuation of the RST report n 22, published by the Acadmie des sciences in March 2006 (French Space Research). The working group, chaired by Jean-Loup Puget, member of the Acadmie, and made up of representatives of CNES, Insu and CEA and experts, led a reflection on the future of space research in France in the current context of the evolution of the research system. This involves anticipating the 15-year evolution of the national scientific system dedicated to the design, development, implementation, testing and scientific exploitation of space missions. This may concern scientific missions that are the subject of specific programming, as well as the use for scientific purposes of data from operational missions or the performance of demonstration missions combining scientific objectives and anticipation of new services. The group reflected on the organization to put in place, in a context where the complexity is increasing and the duration of the operating phases is lengthening, requiring increasingly massive data processing and archiving systems. , but which must allow access by ever-increasing scientific communities, coming in particular from new disciplines in space (biology, agronomy, geography, human sciences). The outline must also take into account the emergence of new technologies (in mechanics, optics, electronics, etc.) and new software requirements. At the same time, it must integrate the new research landscape, which sees the addition of traditional operators in the sector (Cnes, CNRS, CEA) other public or private organizations located further downstream, as well as the ANR, universities and new cooperation tools (RTRA, competitiveness centers, PRES, campus of excellence, etc.). In each of the areas, recommendations are presented.

Abstract

This broad interest text describes how our current understanding of the interiors of the stars came about, beginning in 1870. It starts by discussing the development of our knowledge of the inside of the Sun, and continues on to compare the Sun's and other stars' properties and then discusses how stars form, evolve, and die. The book describes the properties of a variety of stars with special characteristics, and it ends with a discussion of the first stars that formed after the Big Bang. Aiming to show how interesting scientific investigations can encourage young men and women to pursue STEM careers, this book also underscores the role women have played in the development of our understanding.
