The application of digital technologies to historical newspapers have changed the research landscape historians were used to. An Eldorado? Despite undeniable advantages, the new digital affordance of historical newspapers also transforms research practices and confronts historians with new challenges. Drawing on a growing community of practices, the impresso project invited scholars experienced with digitised newspaper collections with the aim of encouraging a discussion on heuristics, source criticism and interpretation of digitized newspapers. This volume provides a snapshot of current research on the subject and offers three perspectives: how digitisation is transforming access to and exploration of historical newspaper collections; how automatic content processing allows for the creation of new layers of information; and, finally, what analyses this enhanced material opens up. ‘impresso - Media Monitoring of the Past’ is an interdisciplinary research project that applies text mining tools to digitised historical newspapers and integrates the resulting data into historical research workflows by means of a newly developed user interface. The question of how best to adapt text mining tools and their use by humanities researchers is at the heart of the impresso enterprise.

This conference volume unites a wide range of scholars working in the fields of history, archaeology, religion, art, and philology in an effort to explore new perspectives and methods in the study of primary sources from premodern South and Southeast Asia. The contributions engage with primary sources (including texts, images, material artefacts, monuments, as well as archaeological sites and landscapes) and draw needed attention to highly adaptable, innovative, and dynamic modes of cultural production within traditional idioms. The volume works to develop categories of historical analysis that cross disciplinary boundaries and represent a wide variety of methodological concerns. By revisiting premodern sources, Asia Beyond Boundaries also addresses critical issues of temporality and periodization that attend established categories in Asian Studies, such as the “Classical Age” or the “Gupta Period”. This volume represents the culmination of the European Research Council (ERC) Synergy project Asia Beyond Boundaries: Religion, Region, Language and the State, a research consortium of the British Museum, the British Library and the School of Oriental and African Studies, in partnership with Leiden University.

The study of human-environment relationships is one of the focal points of settlement and landscape archaeological research. Prehistoric and early historic settlement dynamics between favorable and unfavorable areas raise a number of questions regarding the triggering factors for the development and perception or use of landscapes with different agricultural conditions. The present study focuses on a theoretical and methodological examination of this complex of topics within German-speaking prehistoric archaeology as well as an investigation of prehistoric and early historic settlement dynamics using a case study from southwestern Germany. Based on an archaeological source critique, changes in land use on the Baar and in adjacent natural areas of the southeastern slopes of the Middle Black Forest and the Swabian Alb are recorded by means of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and discussed with findings from other regions under investigation. The database includes 1826 sites from the Paleolithic to the end of the High Middle Ages and is complemented by AMS radiocarbon dating of charcoal samples and OSL dating of sediment samples from colluvia. The synthesis of these archaeological and pedological data makes it possible to record the changing development and conceptualization of the Baar, the Black Forest, and the Swabian Alb. By considering theoretical approaches from anthropology and geography, alternative perspectives for the archaeological treatment of favorable and unfavorable spaces are revealed. Die Untersuchung von Mensch-Umwelt-Beziehungen gehört zu den Schwerpunkten der siedlungs- und landschaftsarchäologischen Forschung. Ur- und frühgeschichtliche Siedlungsdynamiken zwischen Gunst- und Ungunsträumen werfen eine Reihe von Fragen hinsichtlich der auslösenden Faktoren für die Erschließung und Wahrnehmung bzw. Nutzung von Landschaften mit unterschiedlichen agrarwirtschaftlichen Voraussetzungen auf. Im Fokus der vorliegenden Arbeit stehen eine theoretische und methodische Auseinandersetzung mit diesem Themenkomplex innerhalb der deutschsprachigen Prähistorischen Archäologie sowie eine Untersuchung von ur- und frühgeschichtlichen Siedlungsdynamiken anhand eines Fallbeispiels aus dem südwestdeutschen Raum. Ausgehend von einer archäologischen Quellenkritik werden mittels Geographischer Informationssysteme (GIS) Veränderungen in der Landnutzung auf der Baar und in angrenzenden Naturräumen der Südostabdachung des Mittleren Schwarzwaldes sowie der Schwäbischen Alb erfasst und mit Erkenntnissen aus anderen Untersuchungsregionen diskutiert. Warfare on the periphery of Europe and across cultural boundaries is a particular focus of this volume. One article, on Castilian seapower, treats the melding of northern and southern naval traditions; another clarifies the military roles of the Ayyubid and Mamluk miners and stoneworkers in siege warfare; a third emphasizes cultural considerations in an Icelandic conflict; a fourth looks at how an Iberian prelate navigated the line between ecclesiastical and military responsibilities; and a fifth analyzes the different roles of early gunpowder weapons in Europe and China, linking technological history with the significance of human geography. Further contributions also consider technology, two dealing with fifteenth-century English artillery and the third with prefabricated mechanical artillery during the Crusades. Another theme of the volume is source criticism, with re-examinations of the sources for Owain Glyndwr's (possible) victory at Hyddgen in 1401, a (possible) Danish attack on England in 1128, and the role of non-milites in Salian warfare.
