Phase change materials (PCMs) are of high interest in thermal storage and thermal management applications for the earth and for space environments. Nevertheless, their functionality is intrinsically attached to phase change processes, which, from experience, it is known that they are computationally challenging. The present project arises with the intention to give a numerical solution to this problematic. A solver based on the enthalpy-porosity technique, capable to deal with diffusive-convective phase change has been adapted for OpenFOAM 4.1. For the implementation of the enthalpy technique, the work of Voller Mushy has been closely followed, and a detailed explanation of the equations employed and the assumptions that support them is given. Furthermore, the numerical approach is also specified, with a close attention to the discretization process based on the Finite Volume Method (FVM). The solver algorithm is provided with a deep explanation of its implementation in OpenFOAM. Furthermore, an analysis of the convergence of the numerical solution is provided. Moreover, the works of several authors, have been employed to help in some aspects of the implementation and validation of the solver. As part of this validation, the controversial case of the melting of pure Gallium in a rectangular cavity is computed with the OpenFOAM solver. The author gives some discussion about the results obtained and compares them with the existing literature in order to assess the accuracy of the mathematical model employed. The last part of the project employs the customize solver to analyze the thermal behaviour of a PCM during melting. Three different cases are proposed and tested for two different geometries: one under gravity conditions, where natural convection is part of the heat transfer process, and another two independent of gravity or proper of micro-gravity environments: a pure conductive case and a case with Bénard-Marangoni convection.

Commercial poker solvers emerged around 2015, these are paid software used by poker players to study the game and improve their strategies and whose purpose is to find the best way to play in certain poker situations. Unfortunately for us, their implementation is a black box. As poker players and computer science students, we asked ourselves two questions. Why did the most popular poker solvers appear during this period? How to implement our own poker solver? We answer these questions in this thesis. We review the scientific literature and find that in 2015 the Heads-Up Limit Texas Hold’em poker variant has been weakly solved for the first time by a computer program called Cepheus. This poker variant contains 1014 decision points and has been a challenge for artificial intelligence for over 10 years. We find that the best poker AIs after this period face the same challenges and use techniques that have commonalities to solve them. We describe the challenges and techniques used to create a poker solver. The most common challenges are related to the size of a poker game, the computing power and memory required to solve and store a strategy for a game of this magnitude. We implement a poker solver capable of solving abstractions of different poker variants on a home computer using techniques such as Couterfactual Regret Minimization (CFR) and game abstractions. We also create tools to read and study the strategies calculated by our solver. At the end of this thesis, we show that our results are consistent with the results obtained by commercial poker solvers and we discuss ways to improve our implementation and to solve poker situations in games as big as No Limit Texas Hold’em.

In the framework of the completion of EMShip (Erasmus Mundus Double Master in Ship Design and Offshore Structures) Program, this master thesis was undertaken at LHEEA (Laboratory in Hydrodynamics, Energetics and Atmospheric Environment), a CNRS/Ecole Centrale Nantes research laboratory. The purpose of this thesis is the estimation of the non-linearities associated with sea-keeping computation encountered in highly cambered waves. Linear methods like NEMOH developed for small displacements computations do not give good result. To estimate nonlinearity the weakly-nonlinear seakeeping code known as CN-WSC (Weak-Scatterer) was developed. To quantify the non-linearities associated with highly cambered waves, a vertical cylinder was taken and it's motion response are calculated with CN-WSC (Weak-Scatterer) and similar calculations are done with linear code NEMOH. The motions calculated with both methods are compared and differences in the motion for highly cambered waves are illustrated as non-linearities were studied.

Since the late 1940s, linear programming models have been used for many different purposes. Airline companies apply these models to optimize their use of planes and staff. NASA has been using them for many years to optimize their use of limited resources. Oil companies use them to optimize their refinery operations. Small and medium-sized businesses use linear programming to solve a huge variety of problems, often involving resource allocation. In my study, a typical product-mix problem in a manufacturing system producing two products (each product consists of two sub-assemblies) is solved for its optimal solution through the use of the latest versions of MATLAB having the command simlp, which is very much like linprog. As analysts, we try to find a good enough solution for the decision maker to make a final decision. Our attempt is to give the mathematical description of the product-mix optimization problem and bring the problem into a form ready to call MATLAB's simlp command. The objective of this study is to find the best product mix that maximizes profit. The graph obtained using MATLAB commands, give the shaded area enclosed by the constraints called the feasible region, which is the set of points satisfying all the constraints. To find the optimal solution we look at the lines of equal profit to find the corner of the feasible region which yield the highest profit. This corner can be found out at the farthest line of equal profit, which still touches the feasible region. The most critical part is the sensitivity analysis, using Excel Solver, and Parametric Analysis, using computer software, which allows us to study the effect on optimal solution due to discrete and continuous change in parameters of the LP model including to identify bottlenecks. We have examined other options like product outsourcing, one-time cost, cross training of one operator, manufacturing of hypothetical third product on under-utilized machines and optimal sequencing of jobs on machines.

The recent implementation of wear models in the nonlinear solver LS-Dyna allows its use in the numerical simulation of Rotor-Stator Interaction for the very first time. The new capabilities of the solver are studied and are compared to the ones of nonlinear solver Metafor, already capable of simulating Rotor-Stator Interaction. Specifically, the feasibility of such simulations is studied, the best suited contact algorithms are selected, and the performance is assessed. To that end, two LS-Dyna models are developed: a basic ONERA test bench whose purpose is to select the most adequate contact models, and a compressor blade rub test whose purpose is to ensure the correct application of wear on the finite elements model. The choice of contact model is constrained by the limited support of wear in the solver. Penalty methods for contact were considered, double-pass algorithms were rejected due to high variation of contact loads, leaving single-pass algorithms. The penalty computation was selected to ensure the least dependence on the mesh. Soft constraint formulation is not fully independent of the mesh, but offers nodal mass normalization. The specificity of wear computation in LS-Dyna is its application in post-processing only, preventing wear affecting the compressor blade dynamics. The simulation of Rotor-Stator Interaction in LS-Dyna thus necessitates extensive use of computation stops and restarts. A fully functional method to compute Rotor-Stator Interaction was successfully developed for LS-Dyna, with performance similar to Metafor.

Mil Colinas is a NGO founded in 2011 in order to contribute to the battle against inequality. Mil Colinas mediates between northern and southern countries in order to further social development. It is an educative project which started with 30 children and has grown to almost 200 people in addition to three Rwandese educators. Due to the fact that the current room is too small to carry out the activities, there is a clear necessity for the association to have its own space. Last summer (2015), I went to Rukara, the Rwandese village in which Mil Colinas operates. I began taking its measurement and shortly after the land was purchased. The current project plan is to utilize solar energy for the school's main source of power. During the period in which I was there, several facilities were visited (mainly schools and the health centre of Rukara) and some of them are already working with photovoltaic energy. Meetings took place around the country with key energy businesses in East Africa, such as Mobisol. Also the educators and children who are involved in Mil Colinas were directly contacted in order to understand and record the needs and desires they have for the new school. With all the necessary data from this African country, an off-micro grid has to be designed for the current project. This grid provides the required energy (mainly for lights and laptops) through a photovoltaic system and accumulators. Initially, it was necessary to measure the consumption as well as the solar irradiation in the area. Several hypothesis were created; taking into account different weather and other assumptions. Following the hypothesis, some simulations were run in Python in order to plot the charge level of the batteries per hour throughout the whole year. Having these results, some decisions could be taken in account in relation to the quantity of the photovoltaic panels and the batteries with the help of the tool Solver in Excel. The wiring was also calculated as well as the optimum angle for the electrical generators. The system is optimized regarding the economical plan. Several plans were made with AutoCAD are attached as well as the 3D views of the school made with SweetHome3D. As result of this project, there is an installation which will work in 48 V before the inverter and in 230 V upstream; 10 photovoltaic panels of 295 W each and 12 batteries of 200 Ah of capacity. Each unit is part of the installation along with the inverter and the controller. Initial investment reaches $12,257.67 but it is necessary to have a budget of $19,800.89 in total to assure the proper function during at least 24 years.
