Abstract

The purpose of this thesis is the determination of the losses of mass for the Total lubricants plant in Ertvelde (Belgium) for the year 2012.The first part is a literature survey of the production process of the lubricants. The first step in this process is the atmospheric and vacuum distillation of crude oil. The useful distillate fractions for the lubricants are subsequently processed by deasphalting, solvent extraction, dewaxing and hydrofinishing. Finally, the base oils are blended with additives into lubricants with suitable properties. The materials and methods are described in the second part. The materials used are the barrel pistons and SAP. This is the ERP-system used in the lubricants plant. The calculations for the determination of the mass losses, are subsequently described. How to find certain kind of information, like viscosity and density, in SAP, is described as well. The performed experiments and their discussions are described in the last part. The supplies in bulk are followed. The total and relative loss of mass were determined. The losses were large. The corresponding financial loss was calculated. The financial loss was large. The empty barrels are followed as well. The total loss of mass was lower than the supplies in bulk, while the relative loss was larger. The corresponding financial loss was calculated. The financial loss was lower than the supplies in bulk. Finally, the filling of the packages are followed. There appeared to be a gain of mass while filling. The total loss of mass was small and the total financial loss was large for the year 2012.

Abstract

A four-cylinder four-stroke gasoline engine is modified to a hydrogen engine, with the rebuilding of fuel supply and control system. The phenomenon of backfire is described and the effect of injection timing on backfire of port injection hydrogen engine is analyzed. The minimum start of injection (SOI) is derived considering the response time of the electromagnetic solenoid valve. It is finally found that the minimum SOI is approximately linear with the engine speed at a fixed engine load.

Abstract

A combustion engine of a given displacement will develop less power when running on hydrogen compared to gasoline or natural gas operation due to less heating value of the fuel air mixture in the combustion chamber. This drop in output exists for external mixing of hydrogen and air prior to intake valve closure. However, external mixing does not require intricate engine modification. Without substantial investment, supercharging is an effective method to increase the output of a hydrogen engine which uses the simple technique of external mixing of hydrogen and air.AVL stationary type research engine was used to investigate the percentage gain in output and thermal efficiency, knock limited combustion air ratios, NO emission and combustion characteristics at different supercharging pressures. The performance of the supercharged hydrogen engine is also compared with that of naturally aspirated hydrogen engine. Results indicate that compared to naturally aspirated hydrogen engine the output increases as much as 233 % and the percentage increase in indicated thermal efficiency is 29 % at a combustion air ratio of 2.0 and speed of 1200 rpm. By supercharging the hydrogen engine, NO emission increases and knock limit sets in at combustion air ratio leaner than that of naturally aspirated engine. Reduced spark plug gap and better insulation of ignition system are necessary to avoid the ignition failure at supercharged condition of hydrogen engine.
