Sein Anblick verursacht ein schauriges Gefühl, dennoch übt der Schädel auf den Menschen eine faszinierende Anziehungskraft aus. Einzigartige Schädelfunde und Kopfpräparate - von A wie Ahnen- bis Z wie Zuckerschädel - geben Einblicke in das Phänomen des "Schädelkults", das sich in allen Zeiten und Kulturen der Menschheitsgeschichte wiederfindet. Der Ausstellungskatalog ist die erste umfassende Gesamtdarstellung, die sich mit der besonderen Bedeutung von Kopf und Schädel in der Kulturgeschichte des Menschen befasst. Über 300 Exponate aus Europa und Übersee rücken Kopf und Schädel als zentrale Bestandteile des menschlichen Körpers in den Mittelpunkt und vergegenwärtigen, dass unserem Haupt immer wieder symbolische oder mythische Bedeutungen zugewiesen wurden: in Zeugnissen aus Zeiten des Neandertalers wie des Alten Ägypten, der Antike oder der Weltkulturen aller Kontinente. Schädeldeformationen, kunstvoll geschmückte Kopftrophäen, Ahnenschädel sowie verehrte Reliquien, Gefäße aus Schädelknochen oder Darstellungen in der Kunst von Leonardo da Vinci bis Damien Hirst belegen in mehr als 500 Abbildungen eine Urfaszination bis in die Gegenwart. Ein 36-köpfiges internationales Autorenteam befasst sich in seinen Beiträgen mit dem Thema "Schädelkult" aus natur-, geistes- und kulturwissenschaftlicher Perspektive. Faszinierende Einblicke in ein Urphänomen der Menschheitsgeschichte.

Le thème choisi par l'auteur pour cette exposition s'est nourri d'une enquête conduite sur près de deux ans, dans laquelle le département des Arts Graphiques du Musée du Louvre s'est largement impliqué par une sélection d'oeuvres de toute nature traitant d'un même thème: la décollation. Le texte de cet ouvrage est une interrogation constante -une interrogation latente- à travers les thèmes bibliques ou mythologiques, sur l'identité féminine, telle que la propose l'art occidental. Dans ce parcours analytique où Freud est la référence majeure, la figure féminine -et la figure humaine tout court- sont évoquées dans la complexité infinie qui s'attache à ce que l'on veut montrer et à ce que l'on entend dissimuler.
