SKIN AGING --- PATHOLOGY

Skin aging is not only a subjective matter of looking attractive or not, It is a real physiological process involving molecular signaling pathways that have effects on skin components. As a consequence of histological changes in the epidermis or collagen fibers’ degradation in the dermis, wrinkles are formed. This process takes place in the natural course of aging but environmental factors, such as sun exposure or smoking, have also an important influence on the aspect of our skin. Several techniques have been developed to objectively evaluate the ageing skin and the efficacy of anti-aging solutions. The treatments that have a proven efficacy in reducing wrinkles are mostly those performed by dermatologists, like hyaluronic acid fihlers or peelings. The cosmetics industry has being inspired by techniques used by aesthetic medicine to create new anti-aging products for home use. Cosmetics are however much less efficient to fight the consequences of time and very few clinical studies support the effects claimed by companies Le vieillissement cutané n’est pas uniquement une impression subjective de beauté.

The high degree of interest for aesthetics and appearance plays an important role in today’s society. Even though this can be nuanced, no one is indifferent to skin aging. If scientists are yet to discover the true “elixir of youth”, numerous products are already used in the field of anti-aging therapy. Amongst those, we find coenzyme Q10, principally used in topical creams, and hyaluronic acid as injectable filler. Let us consider what these products are, how do they work, when they are used and how effective they are. This master thesis aims at clarifying the matter and outlining the current level of knowledge about those anti –aging products as medical devices.
