The book is divided into five parts: theoretical and observed wave characteristics; coastal processes and sediment transport; coastal structures and related problems; coastal, estuarine and environmental problems; and ship motions. Reports include the effects of wind, storms, and currents. Erosion, sedimentation and beach nourishment are covered. The papers approach these topics with theoretical studies, case reports, models, and field studies.

Abstract

Prepared by the Mooring Analysis Task Committee of the Ports and Harbors Committee of the Coasts, Oceans, Ports, and Rivers Institute of ASCE. This Manual of Practice provides guidelines for the determination of safe mooring design practices for vessels at fixed piers and wharves in ports and harbors. Today's larger, complex ships, with greater wind exposure and deeper drafts, pose particular mooring challenges to designers, captains, and pilots. Costly mooring incidents have emphasized the need for better understanding of mooring design principles, and no single building code or standard specifically addresses the design of berthing and mooring facilities. This manual provides the necessary background to assure that designed structures are sound, adequate, and provide a safe berth for the types of vessels to be accommodated. Topics include: Mooring practice and design requirements; Mooring system components, including mooring lines, fittings and hardware, equipment, fender systems, docking aid and monitoring systems, mechanical and automated mooring systems, and shipboard equipment; Forces on moored vessels, including wind, current, passing vessels, waves, seiche and long wave effects, tide and draft changes, and ice; Mooring analysis methods, including static and dynamic analysis, as well as software and physical models; and Operational considerations, including allowable vessel movement, incidents and breakaways, and maintenance. MOP 129 primarily focuses on mooring large, ocean-going vessels at relatively protected locations, although the basic principles are applicable to small craft and more exposed locations. Designers of port and harbor facilities, as well as owners and managers, will welcome this compact reference to mooring analysis and safe, efficient, fixed-mooring practice.

Abstract

Solving engineering problems associated with coastal and offshore areas is one of the most important environmental challenges we face. The many natural resources in these regions require careful management based on sound scientific and technical information. 219 papers are included in this publication providing in depth state-of-the-art reviews, and current research and practices in coastal engineering. The five main divisions of coastal engineering presented here are: (1) Theoretical and observed wave characteristics; (2) coastal processes and sediment transport; (3) coastal structures and related problems; (4) coastal, estuarine and environmental problems; and (5) ship motions.

Abstract

General Seakeeping qualities of the projected 53-meter and 46-meter motor yachts have been determined by means of theoretical calculations. With the help of a Two-dimensional source distribution program and a linear strip theory method various ship motions and acceleration as well as different extreme effects like deck wetness and bottom slamming were derived for the vessel running in irregular short-crested seaways. Thereby the full ranges of relative course angels and ship speed up to 16 knots have been taken into consideration. 
In this study two operational areas (Mediterranean and Aegean Sea) and three sea ways conditions (sea State 3, 4 and 5) were investigated which feature significant wave height in the range of 0.88 m and 3.25 m. 
The outcome of the theoretical study was checked against various performance criteria. The compliance of the projected motor yacht with limiting criteria is illustrated in the form of polar diagrams. Besides this, the seakeeping characteristics of the vessel (ship motion and extreme seakeeping effects) are represented in the form of Cartesian diagrams for all combination of seaway condition, relative course angle and ship speed. 
In sea State 3 conditions the projected vessels can run without restriction in both areas of operation. In contrast, some performance criteria are exceeded in sea State 4 while the operations of the yachts are restricted in sea State 5 by at least one performance criteria.

Abstract

Due to the intensive development of the global economy, many problems are constantly emerging connected to the safety of ships’ motion in the context of increasing marine traffic. These problems seem to be especially significant for the further development of marine transportation services, with the need to considerably increase their efficiency and reliability. One of the most commonly used approaches to ensuring safety and efficiency is the wide implementation of various automated systems for guidance and control, including such popular systems as marine autopilots, dynamic positioning systems, speed control systems, automatic routing installations, etc. This Special Issue focuses on various problems related to the analysis, design, modelling, and operation of the aforementioned systems. It covers such actual problems as tracking control, path following control, ship weather routing, course keeping control, control of autonomous underwater vehicles, ship collision avoidance. These problems are investigated using methods such as neural networks, sliding mode control, genetic algorithms, L2-gain approach, optimal damping concept, fuzzy logic and others. This Special Issue is intended to present and discuss significant contemporary problems in the areas of automatic control and the routing of marine vessels.

This Special Issue contains 12 papers devoted to fluid/structure interaction (FSI) problems. The main feature of the problems is an interface on which consistent boundary conditions for both the liquid and the solid regions are formulated. The presented studies cover a wide range of problems and methods for their solution, including problems of weak, or one-way interaction, in which the effect of interface deformation on the fluid flow can be neglected, as well as problems of the strong interaction, for which the interface change affects both the flow and the structure behaviour. The interest in FSI problems is very great due to their practical importance. Recent developments in engineering have led to advanced formulations of FSI problems. Some of them could not be formulated several years ago. The presented papers demonstrate progress in both numerical algorithms, mathematical apparatus and advanced computational techniques. In this issue, we have tried to collect different FSI problems, new mathematical and numerical approaches, new numerical techniques and, of course, new results, which can provide an insight into FSI processes.
