Abstract

Dans le domaine de la sécurité sanitaire des aliments, il est important d'anticiper et de réagir&#13;rapidement face aux dangers présents à chaque étape de la production pour éviter des cas de&#13;toxi-infections alimentaires. Salmonella, qui en est un pathogène fréquent en Europe, est&#13;soumise à réglementation pour diverses denrées. Dans ce contexte, la spectroscopie infrarouge&#13;à transformée de Fourier (FT-IR) représente une alternative rapide et peu coûteuse aux&#13;méthodes traditionnelles de typage bactérien. Cette méthode reposant sur la réponse spécifique&#13;des composants bactériens aux vibrations infrarouges et dont le spectre qui en résulte représente&#13;une véritable signature de la bactérie, nécessite toutefois un protocole rigoureux et des&#13;conditions standardisées.&#13;Au travers de 115 souches de Salmonella appartenant à 3 sérogroupes et 6 sérotypes ciblés&#13;par l'Union européenne, analysées en triplicats biologiques et techniques (1.035 analyses),&#13;cette étude a pour objectif d’élaborer un protocole standardisé, en évaluant la capacité de&#13;discrimination du classificateur FT-IR pour le typage de cette bactérie et en étudiant&#13;l'influence de certains paramètres sur celui-ci.&#13;Les régions spectrales situées entre 1.200 et 900 cm-1, correspondant aux hydrates de&#13;carbone, se sont avérés les plus discriminantes. D'autres pourraient être explorées pour&#13;améliorer la discrimination, particulièrement pour le sérogroupe O:4. L'analyse discriminante&#13;linéaire (LDA) s'est également révélée la plus efficace pour différencier les sérogroupes. La&#13;variation de certains paramètres, comme la réfrigération des cultures avant incubation, la&#13;lecture différée de la plaque FT-IR et l’utilisation d’Eppendorfs classiques, n’ont montré que&#13;peu de différences comparativement au protocole standard. Tandis que d'autres, comme la&#13;réfrigération avant repiquage et l'utilisation de gélose nutritive (NA) au lieu de gélose&#13;tryptone soja (TSA), ont montré des résultats moins concordants avec ceux-ci.&#13;Les capacités prometteuses de typage de Salmonella au niveau de leur sérogroupe par la&#13;méthode FT-IR, combinées à sa rapidité pourrait permettre la levée plus rapide de mesures&#13;temporaires, comme le blocage des lots de volaille, dans la production primaire ou de relier un&#13;cas de toxi-infection alimentaire à l’aliment qui l’a occasionnée. Toutefois, cette méthode&#13;pourrait encore être améliorée grâce à l'élaboration d'un classificateur basé sur la large&#13;collection de souches séquencées que possède Sciensano et à l’entrainement du réseau neuronal&#13;artificiel (ANN) du logiciel.

Abstract

Electrical and electro-optical biosensing technologies are critical to the development of innovative POCT devices, which can be used by both professional and untrained personnel for the provision of necessary health information within a short time for medical decisions to be determined, being especially important in an era of global pandemics. This Special Issue includes a few pioneering works concerning biosensors utilizing electrochemical impedance, localized surface plasmon resonance, and the bioelectricity of sensing materials in which the amount of analyte is pertinent to the signal response. The presented results demonstrate the potential of these label-free biosensing approaches in the detection of disease-related small-molecule metabolites, proteins, and whole-cell entities.

Abstract

Viruses of the Parvoviridae family constitute a most diverse and intriguing field of research. Parvoviruses can differ widely in their structure, genome organization and expression, virus–cell interactions, and impact on hosts. The translational implication of research on parvoviruses is relevant, since many viruses are important human and veterinary pathogens, while other viruses can be engineered as tools for oncolytic therapy or as sophisticated gene delivery vectors. Exploring the diversity and inherent complexity in the biology of these apparently simple viruses is a still challenging topic for the scientific community. The Special Issue of Viruses is a collection of recent contributions in the field of parvovirus research, encompassing many aspects of basic and translational research on viruses of the family Parvoviridae, including on their structure, replication, and gene expression in addition to virus–host interactions and the development of vaccines and viral vectors.

Abstract

This timely collection of expert papers draws attention to the global burden of meningitis and the challenges faced by the WHO’s roadmap to defeat meningitis by 2030. The three main goals of the meningitis roadmap are to eliminate epidemics of bacterial meningitis, reduce cases and deaths from vaccine-preventable bacterial meningitis, and reduce disability and improve quality of life after meningitis of any cause. This book includes a wide range of original research and reviews on epidemiology and vaccination of bacterial meningitis that have direct relevance to advancing the goals of the roadmap.

Abstract

This book collects 25 scientific articles from laboratories around the world, all of which use botulinum neurotoxins as the main protagonists of their studies. The use of botulinum neurotoxin in medicine, following its ability to inhibit the effects of various disorders of different etiology on the human organism, constitutes the main topic of each article presented here. This book, which is aimed at both students and medical professionals, attempts to summarize current knowledge about the use of botulinum toxin as a therapeutic agent in many diseases, ranging from spasticity to tremor, form motor dysfunction after stroke to neuropathic pain, from hyperactive muscle to migraine, and so on. Thanks to its simplified writing, accessible to an audience who may not be familiar with the mysteries of science, readers will get new insights into this biological toxin and its multiple applications, not simply relegated to its historical use to correct of face wrinkles. Both review and research articles are presented, not only concerning animal studies, but also clinical reports. This book will provide an up-to-date picture of the state-of-the-art of the possible development of novel applications of botulinum neurotoxins for future therapeutic purposes.
