The city as canvas: How self-expression, politics, and protest reclaim the streets Made in collaboration with its featured artists, Trespass traces the rise and global reach of graffiti and urban art, not just as a fringe visual movement but as a social phenomenon and central expression of youth. With an exclusive preface from Banksy, Trespass, now available as a popular Reader's Edition, presents the full historical sweep, international spread, and technical developments of the street art movement. Featuring key works by 150 artists, it connects four generations of street practitioners, incoporating both niche artists such as Miss Van and noteworthy names as Jean Tinguely, Keith Haring, Barbara Kruger, Jenny Holzer, Gordon Matta-Clark, Billboard Liberation Front, Guerrilla Girls, and Banksy. The book is set out in thematic chapters that engage with the central theme of 'trespassing'. While images of the works are allowed to speak for themselves, each theme is prefaced by a brief essay to provide thought-provoking context to the history, politics, protest, and illicit performance of self-expression in the social space. Van subtiel en gevoelig tot grof en seksistisch. Maar liefst 22 jaar deed emeritus hoogleraar psychologie Stefan Lievens onderzoek naar teksten op Vlaamse toiletten. Lievens werkte sinds 1984 aan het boek, waarin hij ruimhartig citeert. 'Liever één kut in de hand dan tien in 't maandverband' of 'Wie wil poepen met schuim, stopt best OMO in de pruim.' In Het Laatste Nieuws geeft de 66-jarige professor toe dat hij vaak gechoqueerd raakte. "Maar ik moet ook toegeven dat het toch soms ook de boertige hilariteit van het jongetje in mezelf bovenhaalde." De auteurs van toiletproza die Lievens sprak, vond hij maar seksuele zielenpoten. Hij vond op zijn speurtocht weinig respect voor de vrouwelijke kunne. "Het aantal ronduit grove uitlatingen over vrouwen is ontelbaar en de dames worden zonder omhaal gedenigreerd tot nul komma nul. Geloof me, in een doorsnee urinoir in Vlaanderen is geen enkele vrouw een bevrijd mens", aldus Lievens. Voorbeelden? 'Vrouwen zijn koteletten, hoe meer je ze slaat, hoe malser ze worden.' Of: 'Toon uw macht en verkracht'. Lievens stuitte zo vaak op een dergelijk niveau dat hij het niet langer als een marginaal gegeven kon beschouwen. Hij hoopt maar dat de teksten zich beperken tot de fantasie van de toiletbezoeker of een manier zijn om stoom af te blazen.
