The book is inspired by the reports discussed at the Conference Territorio, popolazione e risorse: strutture produttive nell’economia del mondo romano, organized in Naples, on 26 October 2018; it represents the result of a research project aimed at analysing the economic, political and social evolution of the Italic territory, mainly of Regio I, in Roman times. For this specific geographical-administrative area, we have considered aspects and problems relating to the rural landscape, the forms of production and the role of cities, through the reinterpretation of different types of evidence (primarily literary and documentary sources) on the basis of the theoretical assumption that there is a close correlation between population, resource exploitation and urbanization.

The book Rural Tourism is collective work of a team of members of the Association SVECR. After the monograph Municipal Tourism (2017), it is the second book from a series entitled Current Topics in Tourism. This monograph aims to present a wide range of issues related to rural tourism, which can be considered a possible option for establishing sustainable development in rural areas. The need for regular maintenance of the cultural landscape of the countryside requires the development of new alternative programs which will include tourism as one component. The publication includes the new insights contributing to the formation of a theoretical foundation, research projects and key studies about rural tourism in the Czech Republic. It presents possible options and current topics for next research in this area.

The acceleration of human activities is endangering cultural landscapes, that are changing more and more rapidly and tend to standardize. As a common living heritage, it is significant to think about how to support their transformation. To that end, we propose to explore the dynamics of landscape evolution. The phenomenon of housing that mark the social changes, as visible and sustainable framework in the landscape of human societies, will be the gateway of these work. In this study, we will focus more particularly on rural landscapes, constituting a strong appeal for our increasingly urban society. The case study of the landscape of the Baronnies, in the south-east of France, will be considered. The Baronnies are a massif at the interface of Alpine and Mediterranean influences, characterized by a traditional perched habitat. At first, we will question the concept of «landscape» in order to develop a singular methodology to prove the hypothesis that the recent dynamics of expansion of hilltop villages disrupt the landscape of the Baronnies. To achieve this, we will first define the facies of the Baronnies’ landscape by identifying collectively recognized landscape patterns. Then, we will try to perceive how the systems and the spatial structure that they produce influence the habitat. After having described the various forms that it can take, we will analyze its dynamics thanks to the study of the factors at the origin of the changes. Particularly, we will analyze the evolution of the habitat of four villages through which we will be able to precisely identify the fracture with the landscape and the associated issues in terms of planning to find a continuity.

This superb historical and ethnographic study of the political economy of the Vega Baja region of Spain, one of the European Union's "Regional Economies," takes up the difficult question of how to understand the growing alienation ordinary working people feel in the face of globalization. Combining rich oral histories with a sophisticated and nuanced structural understanding of changing political economies, the authors examine the growing divide between government and its citizens in a region that has in the last four decades been transformed from a primarily agricultural economy to a primarily industrial one. Offering a new form of ethnography appropriate for the study of suprastate polities and a globalized economy, Immediate Struggles contributes to our understanding of one region as well as the way we think about changing class relations, modes of production, and cultural practices in a newly emerging Europe. The authors also consider how phenomena such as the "informal economy" and "black market" are not marginal to the normal operation of state and economic institutions but are intertwined with both.

This book is a compilation of 10 recently published academic articles addressing sustainable residential landscape design and planning across geographies, scales, and perspectives: from American rain garden design to South Korean urban forestry; from Mexican community open space design to Australian neighborhood park planning; and from Chinese urban design to Bolivian land-use change. This volume brings together authors from a growing community of landscape sustainability scholars of landscape architecture and architecture; planning and construction; ecology and horticulture; agricultural and environmental sciences; and health, exercise, and nutrition. In summary, these papers address facets of a fundamental challenge for the 21st century: the design and planning of sustainable and resilient human settlements.

Over the last two decades, many researchers have focused on developing countries' urbanization patterns and processes. In this context, the scarcity of spatial data has been an obstacle to studying urbanization quantitatively, especially in Asian and African cities. The use of remote sensing data and geographical information systems (GIS) techniques can overcome the above limitations. Data on land use and land cover, land surface temperature, population density, and energy consumption can be extracted based on remote sensing at various spatial and temporal resolutions. GIS techniques can be used to analyze urbanization patterns and predict future patterns. Thus, the link between urbanization and sustainable urban development has increasingly become a principal issue in designing and developing sustainable cities at the local, regional, and global levels. This volume shows the spatiotemporal analysis of urbanization using GIS and remote sensing in developing countries, with a special emphasis on future urban sustainability in Asia and Africa. Capturing the spatial-temporal variation of urbanization patterns will help introduce proper sustainable urban planning in developing countries, especially for Asian and African cities.
