The need to understand, interpret and analyse competing risk data is key to many areas of science, particularly medical research. There is a real need for a book that presents an overview of methodology used in the interpretation and analysis of competing risks, with a focus on practical applications to medical problems, and incorporating modern techniques. This book fills that need by presenting the most up-to-date methodology, in a way that can be readily understood, and applied, by the practitioner.

In the continuation of what has been produced in the series "Risks and Disasters", this volume assumes the thematic continuity, in a more systematic and holistic logic. It concerns, in particular, the theme of "Anthropic disasters. An integral approach", so it is a very unusual character. Let's say that the type of risks it deals with, the synthesis nature it presents and the organizational structure chosen, gives it a singular character in the contemporary world context. In the path of anthropic disasters, two major risk groups were considered, namely technological and social. The first relate to structural systems to support human activity, such as transport, civil construction, urban spaces (fires, waste) and water resources. The second is associated with social action, and it addresses issues ranging from conflict to Urbicicide.

This publication, entitled “Natural Disasters. A Global Approach” brings together a set of texts devoted specifically to disasters that have as their origin phenomena of nature, full manifestation of the so-called natural hazards. Throughout each of these chapters, we have sought to clarify the conceptual and methodological aspects inherent in each of the risks under analysis, their systematization or typification, effects and consequences, particularly for the Human Being, and examples of their manifestation. Although with distinct characteristics and influenced by different factors, the extent of natural disasters is evident, affecting the generality of human societies and conditioning their activity in almost all parts of the earth´s surface. It is our hope that this work will fulfill its intended purpose and become a valuable working tool and a vehicle for disseminating information and raising awareness of natural disasters.
