Abstract

Against a backdrop of climate change and the rapid evolution of land and resources use, we can now see that forest fires are no longer confined to the Mediterranean regions, but are on the doorstep of temperate regions. The consequences of these fires will be exacerbated in areas unused to these new disturbances. Landscape architects can make a valuable contribution to these issues, both in temperate regions and in Mediterranean ecosystems, where the means of combating wildfire are showing their limits.
After some contextualisation, the study carried out in this work focused on the case of the Moselotte valley in the Ballons des Vosges Regional Nature Park (PnrBV). After an initial landscape and contextual approach in the form of a diagnostic analysis, a method commonly used to map and plan fire-fighting strategies was adapted to the context of temperate regions. The composite methodology developed for this work is an appropriation of the habitat-forest interface mapping method of Lampin-Maillet et al (2010), combined with data on the susceptibility of plant formations to fire (resulting from ONF research work in 2021) and a method for generating data on the exposure of massifs (combination of slope and exposure data). The aim of this work is to provide an initial assessment of the forest risk in relation to the characteristics of the site. In the final, more conceptual part, we attempted to formulate some ideas for long-term land-use planning, drawing on the collective intelligence and structural elements of the Moselotte valley landscape.
This work was carried out in collaboration with the Pnr, with the aim of replicating this approach across the whole of its territory, facilitated by their networks of federated players and developed in a multidisciplinary approach, responding to the socio-economic, environmental and landscape issues of the territory. The search for a landscape that is resilient to the risk of fire highlights the fact that many of the keys to this development are already present in the area and can and should be associated with the problem of forest fires. Act rather than suffer, landscape rather than fight.

Abstract

Healthcare workers are exposed to several different occupational risk factors, and they pay an important tribute in terms of occupational diseases and work-related injuries. Currently, the COVID-19 pandemic has focused the attention on the problem of the infectious risk, which is certainly among the risks typically expected and specifically recognized for the health personnel, but also other occupational risks should not be overlooked, such as, e.g., the risks associated with work-organization factors and with the exposure to chemical and physical agents. The health consequences associated with the exposure to all these factors have relevant impacts in terms of induced diseases, DALYs, sickness absence from work and costs for the health systems. According to these premises, this reprint has collected manuscripts addressing topics related to the prevention of the occupational risks in the healthcare sector, including original articles and reviews on the prevention of work-related illnesses and injuries of the health personnel, as well as on the evaluation of the risks in the healthcare workplaces, and on the topics of risk perception and of the knowledge and attitudes of the workers towards the preventive procedures and the use of protections. The themes of the prevention of occupational infectious risk, biomechanical overload of the musculoskeletal system and work-related psychosocial factors are specifically discussed in the papers collected.

Abstract

Abstract

This book explores the nexus among food, energy and water in peri-urban areas, demonstrating how relevant this nexus is for environmental sustainability. In particular it examines the effective management of the nexus in the face of the risks and trade-offs of mitigation policies, and as a mean to create resilience to climate change. The book delineates strategies and actions necessary to develop and protect our natural resources and improve the functionality of the nexus, such as: integrated management of the major resources that characterize the metabolism of a city, stronger coordination among stakeholders who often weight differently the services that are relevant to their individual concerns, integration of efforts towards environmental protection, adaptation to and prevention of climate change and disaster risks mitigation.
