"During the night of July 25, 1941, assassins planted a time bomb in the bed of former French Interior Minister Marx Dormoy. The explosion of the bomb on the morning of July 26 launched a two-year investigation that traced Dormoy's murder to the highest echelons of the Vichy regime. Dormoy, who had led a 1937 investigation into the "Cagoule," a violent ultra-right-wing terrorist organization, was the victim of a captivating revenge plot. Based on the meticulous examination of thousands of documents, Assassination in Vichy tells the story of Dormoy's murder and of the investigation, led by courageous Police Superintendent Charles Chenevier, who persisted despite opposition from both Vichy and collaborationists in Paris. A book about France's deep political divisions, wartime choices, and post-war memory, Assassination in Vichy explores the impact of fascist extremism on France's history and explains why after the war none of Dormoy's assassins were punished for his murder. At the heart of this book lies the investigation of a true crime that was sensational in its day but overshadowed by the war. It is a microhistory that also tells a larger and more significant story about the development of far-right political movements, domestic terrorism, and the importance of courage."--

Social media are increasingly becoming a space where social and political conflicts are carried out and discursively processed. Extreme right and Salafist/Jihadist actors participate in these conflicts and use them as a platform for propaganda. This volume is devoted to the question of how processes of mobilization and radicalization unfold in social media and under what conditions they can lead to violent acts in the real world.

While the COVID-19 pandemic overshadowed all else and would quickly have a lasting impact on our daily lives, other events related to the radical right in 2020 soon surfaced. From terrorist attacks in Germany and India to anti-mask protests across the U.S. and Europe, radical right violence escalated in the midst of circulating conspiracy theories and disinformation. The yearbook draws upon insightful analyses from an international network of scholars, policymakers, and practitioners who explore the dynamics and impact of the radical right. It explores a wide range of topics including reflections on authoritarianism and fascism, the role of ideology and (counter-)intellectuals, and radical-right responses to the pandemic and calls for police reform in the height of the Black Lives Matter protests. It ends with important assessments on best approaches towards countering the radical right, both online and offline. This timely overview provides a broad examination of the global radical right in 2020, which will be useful for scholars, students, policymakers, journalists, and the public.
