This book is a systematic attempt to examine the literary consequences of German reunification. Placing the concept of the Kulturnation at the centre of its analysis, the book explores the ways in which literature both responds to and helps to constitute notions of German national identity. Previous studies of German literature have tended to avoid the problem of nationhood: this is one of the few books in any language to treat contemporary Germany as a cultural and national unity. The book discusses German literature from the early 1980s through the late 1990s, with a primary focus on the way in which authors of the 1990s have sought to cope with and respond to reunification and emerging questions about history, politics and identity. Larger questions are addressed about the role of both the nation and a national literature in the context of economic and political globalization.

Traiter des relations artistiques européennes entre l’Est et l’Ouest pendant la guerre froide est un défi. En effet, la limitation des circulations et l’imprégnation du champ artistique par des idéologies rivales peut rendre la démarche illusoire, mais considérer ces limites incite à les questionner. S’appuyant sur des exemples concrets de relations artistiques entre la France, la RFA, la RDA et la Pologne, à la fois dans les discours sur l’art et dans les pratiques artistiques des années 1960 à 1989, cet ouvrage porte sur les conceptions singulières des notions de réel et de réalité selon les contextes, tout en éclairant les partages, incompréhension, malentendus. Musées, catalogues, revues, galeries, congrès, espaces extérieurs sont les lieux dans lesquels les facettes de ces conceptions prennent forme à travers les différents auteurs et acteurs de l’histoire de l’art que sont les artistes, les historiens et critiques d’art. À partir des distinctions et des rapprochements étudiés, cet essai interroge les précédentes analyses pour offrir un point de vue renouvelé sur ces relations, en Europe, durant cette période. Die Auseinandersetzung mit den künstlerischen Beziehungen in Europa zwischen Ost und West während des Kalten Krieges ist eine Herausforderung. Die Einschränkung der Zirkulation sowie die Durchdringung und Beeinflussung des künstlerischen Feldes durch die rivalisierenden Ideologien scheinen dieses Unterfangen aussichtslos zu machen; diese Grenzen erneut in den Blick zu nehmen erfordert jedoch auch sie in Frage zu stellen. In the mid-summer of 1989 the German Democratic Republic-- known as the GDR or East Germany--was an autocratic state led by an entrenched Communist Party. A loyal member of the Warsaw Pact, it was a counterpart of the Federal Republic of Germany (West Germany), which it confronted with a mixture of hostility and grudging accommodation across the divide created by the Cold War. Over the following year and a half, dramatic changes occurred in the political system of East Germany and culminated in the GDR's "accession" to the Federal Republic itself. Yet the end of Germany's division evoked its own new and very bitter constitutional problems. The Imperfect Union discusses these issues and shows that they are at the core of a great event of political, economic, and social history. Part I analyzes the constitutional history of eastern Germany from 1945 through the constitutional changes of 1989-1990 and beyond to the constitutions of the re-created east German states. Part II analyzes the Unification Treaty and the numerous problems arising from it: the fate of expropriated property on unification; the unification of the disparate eastern and western abortion regimes; the transformation of East German institutions, such as the civil service, the universities, and the judiciary; prosecution of former GDR leaders and officials; the "rehabilitation" and compensation of GDR victims; and the issues raised by the fateful legacy of the files of the East German secret police. Part III examines the external aspects of unification.
