Abstract

While the present state of knowledge on the time dependent deformation behaviour of normal and high-strength concrete may be considered as sufficiently determined, the creep and shrinkage of lightweight aggregate (LWA) concrete, particularly of high-strength LWA concrete, can only be specified inadequately. On the basis of the experimental results a prediction model for shrinkage and creep of structural lightweight aggregate concrete was developed.

Abstract

The downgrading of projects at the closing from moderately satisfactory to moderately unsatisfactory has been a persistent problem in the World Bank and a particular problem in the World Bank's East Asia and Pacific region since 2012. Through analysis of the projects that exited the East Asia and Pacific region's portfolio in fiscal years 2012 and 2013, this paper derives a prediction model based on ratings for implementation progress and achievement of development objectives during project supervision. The model, used in combination with other indicators of project progress toward outcomes, appears to improve on existing methods for assessing the downgrade risk.

Abstract

The organisational performance, due to its impact on the success and profitability of companies, is a subject that economists and the scientific community have long studied through analyses and interviews carried out with field experts. The current context of globalization has reinforced the relevancy of performance analysis as a differentiation factor in an environment where competition between firms has increased. This thesis aims at analysing the performance of PFS Belgium, a services company operating in the field of e-commerce, on behalf of its main client Pandora, based on key performance indicators defined in agreement between both parties. In this thesis, we will explore various aspects of performance sometimes set aside in favour of operational objectives that allow to meet the short-term profitability requirements.First, we will focus on enriching the performance reporting tools by adding new indicators to the pre-existing basis. Then, we will select the most relevant indicators, that will constitute the baseline of future analyses. A second internal analysis will aim at prioritizing indicators by decreasing order of their contribution to the objectives defined by Pandora and PFS. Afterwards, we will subject these key performance indicators to different types of statistical analyses in order to identify the relationships occurring between them. Based on these relationships, we will use prediction models that will assist the company in organising its activity based on the expected results. Next, we will carry out an external performance analysis using the benchmarking model. We will compare the values of Pandora’s key performance indicators with the corresponding values from the industry of reference, that of online jewellery. This external analysis will help the company understand its position on the market and adapt its practices accordingly, using the recommendations made in this thesis. The analysis template and procedure will be handed over to PFS managers in order to be replicated to other business clients in order to answer their needs. Finally, we will briefly list the limitations of this thesis.

Abstract

Azoospermia, defined as the absence of sperm in the ejaculate after examination of the centrifuged specimens, affects about 1% of the male population and 10–15% of infertile men. In about two-thirds of cases, this is caused by severe spermatogenic dysfunction, and it is commonly termed “nonobstructive azoospermia” (NOA) to differentiate it from the less severe form of azoospermia caused by the obstruction of the seminal tract (obstructive azoospermia—OA), the latter affecting the remaining one-third of cases. Managing patients with NOA is challenging due to the severity of spermatogenic dysfunction and the lack of medical treatments, with surgical retrieval of testicular sperm being the only way of enabling some of these patients to father their own biological children. In-depth clinical knowledge is key for supporting clinical reasoning and decision making when counselling patients with NOA, and surgical skill is required to maximize the outcome of surgical procedures that aim to retrieve testicular sperm. The present book is a collection of scientific papers published in a Special Issue of the Journal of Clinical Medicine, authored by some of the most influential researchers in the field. The Special Issue, and thus also this book, were conceived to provide early career reproductive urologists and endocrinologists with an update of the scientific evidence in the field, together with surgical tips.

Abstract

Electronic engineering and design innovation are both academic and practical engineering fields that involve systematic technological materialization through scientific principles and engineering designs. Technological innovation via electronic engineering includes electrical circuits and devices, computer science and engineering, communications and information processing, and electrical engineering communications. The Special Issue selected excellent papers presented at the International Conference on Knowledge Innovation and Invention 2018 (IEEE ICKII 2018) on the topic of electronics and their applications. This conference was held on Jeju Island, South Korea, 23–27 July 2018, and it provided a unified communication platform for researchers from all over the world. The main goal of this Special Issue titled “Selected papers from IEEE ICKII 2018” is to discover new scientific knowledge relevant to the topic of electronics and their applications.

Abstract

This book, Green Concrete for a Better Sustainable Environment, aims to cover recent advances in the development of green concrete solutions and discuss the best ways to leverage opportunities in this domain. Concrete can be described as green concrete if it has one of the following features; it uses waste material as at least one of its components, its production process does not lead to environmental destruction, or it has high performance and life cycle sustainability. At present, natural resources are running out. Cement and concrete made from industrial and construction waste can be regarded as valuable resources for civil infrastructure construction. Green concrete will not only contribute to a circular economy, but can also help to reduce the amount of embodied energy and CO2 emissions associated with cement manufacturing and aggregate quarrying. Using green concrete can also mitigate the environmental threats associated with industrial waste materials. This book covers the theoretical, experimental, applied and modelling research studies on the materials, products and structures related to sustainable cement-based composites.
