A set of testing procedures that enable verification, quantification of performance, and comparison of the performance with expected minimum requirements of the different functions of the microgrid controller are developed in this standard. The functions tested are microgrid controller functions that are common to the control of all microgrids regardless of topology, configuration, or jurisdiction. It aims to present metrics for a comparison of the control functions required from both the microgrid operator and the Distribution System Operator (DSO). This standard is functionalitydriven and focuses on a modular approach to the implementation of the functional requirements.

The application layer with TCP/IP providing functions in the transport and Internet layers to enable utility management of the end user energy environment, including demand response, load control, time of day pricing, management of distributed generation, electric vehicles, etc. is defined in this standard. Depending on the physical layer in use (e.g., IEEE 802.15.4™, IEEE 802.11™, IEEE 1901™, IEEE 1901.2™), a variety of lower layer protocols may be involved in providing a complete solution. Generally, lower layer protocols are not discussed in this standard except where there is direct interaction with the application protocol. The mechanisms for exchanging application messages, the exact messages exchanged including error messages, and the security features used to protect the application messages are defined in this standard. With respect to the Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) network model, this standard is built using the four layer Internet stack model. The defined application profile sources elements from many existing standards, including IEC 61968 and IEC 61850, and follows a RESTful architecture (Fielding [B3]) using IETF protocols such as HTTP.

Annotation The major theme of the symposium focuses on the smart microgrids (SMGs) those enable the distribution and production of electrical energy including traditional and emerging renewable sources. The Energy tracks will cover efficient energy production saving technologies and harvesting renewable resources and intelligent monitoring based on SMGs. The rapidly emerging area of Internet of Things IoT and associated photonic and other intelligent sensors networks enable SMGs. The SMGs are the harbinger of intelligent demand and response services (DRS) which include rapid response, reliability, and security. The scope of the HONET International Symposium will cover R & D and application topics ranging from new techniques, materials and device technologies with intelligent sensors, associated systems consisting of communication networks, cyber security, e applications and even social networks.
