Wo ist der literaturgeschichtliche Ort der Gegenwartsliteratur? Die Studie zielt, anders als ereignisgeschichtlich ausgerichtete Versuche, auf eine Strukturgeschichte, die sich auf Pierre Bourdieus Konzept des literarischen Feldes stützt. So wird der Blick frei für die lange Genese der Gegenwartsliteratur seit den 1960er Jahren. Der erste Teil rekonstruiert die Formation des deutsch-deutschen literarischen Feldes. Der zweite Teil widmet sich der Gegenwartsliteratur seit den 1990er Jahren. Autorpositionen werden insbesondere über symptomatische Konflikte und Konkurrenzstellungen situiert (Hans Magnus Enzensberger und Peter Weiss). Weitere Studien betreffen die Autorposition u.a. von W.G. Sebald, die Popliteraten, das literarische "Fräuleinwunder", Daniel Kehlmann und Elfriede Jelinek. Die Arbeit stellt den ersten systematischen Versuch einer feldanalytischen Literaturgeschichte der Gegenwartsliteratur dar. Sie versteht sich als eine Weiterentwicklung der Feldanalyse Bourdieus und ist damit ein Beitrag zur Diskussion einer Literaturgeschichte "nach der Sozialgeschichte".

Wolfgang Borchert has been called 'the most important voice of post-war German literature.' He came to fame literally overnight when his play 'Draussen vor der Tür' (The Man Outside) was broadcast in the British zone of occupied Germany in February 1947 and evoked impassioned reactions both for and against. An examination of the plight of the returning soldier in the postwar world, it has become an icon of its time, capturing the futility of war and the true cost of the destruction in both physical and spiritual terms. Worldwide, 'Draussen vor der Tür' has been produced more often than any other German play. Between January 1946 and his death in November 1947, Borchert wrote over forty short stories on the model of Hemingway and Wolfe, many of them highly experimental. Indeed, he is widely regarded as having introduced the short-story form into German literature. This is the first full-length account of Borchert's life and works in English. It benefits from unprecedented access to archival material and from interviews with Borchert's contemporaries. The study links Borchert's own literary ambition with the enlightened family circumstances in which he grew up, and charts his development from a rebellious teenager with a passion for theater via his fighting as a soldier on Germany's Eastern Front and his imprisonment by the Nazis to his brief but intense career as a writer. ›Skandale‹ um geheim gehaltene Verstrickungen in den Nationalsozialismus haben u. a. mit Grass, Andersch oder Walser zentrale Mitglieder der Gruppe 47 betroffen. Die Studie fragt erstmals systematisch nach der Bedeutung dieser Einflüsse für die literarischen Texte der Gruppe. Ausgehend vom gegenwärtigen Bild der Gruppe 47, von Theorien narrativer Ethik und der Geschichtsforschung zur ›NS-Moral‹ untersucht die Studie diskursive Verknüpfungen von Moral und Zugehörigkeit in den wichtigsten Texten der Gruppe 47. Qualitative und quantitative Analysen zeigen die Vorherrschaft eines partikularen Moralverständnisses sowie in mehreren Texten einen Zusammenhang dieser Moralvorstellungen mit literarischem Antisemitismus. Daneben finden sich - u. a. in Bezugnahmen auf Bubers dialogisches Prinzip, das gerade die Hinwendung zum ›radikal Anderen‹ als ethisches Handeln konzipiert - auch alternative Ethiken; allerdings oft in Texten marginalisierter oder als untypisch geltender Mitglieder wie Bachmann und Celan.

This volume surveys the life and work of the Scottish poet Ian Hamilton Finlay, who is best known for his extraordinary garden, Little Sparta, a unique "poem of place" in which poetry, sculpture, and horticulture intersect. This book directs sustained attention to Finlay the verbal artist, revealing the full breadth and richness of his poetics. It illuminates the evolution from his early years of composing plays, stories, and lyrical poems to his discovery of Concrete poetry and his emergence as a key figure in the international avant-garde of the 1960's.
