Die Chiffre "1968" ist Name für einen Erinnerungsort, der insbesondere durch seine Sprache das kollektive Gedächtnis prägt. Nach vierzig Jahren ist die Zeit für eine Zwischenbilanz gekommen. Diese Bilanz wird in dem vorliegenden Sammelband gezogen. Er enthält die überarbeiteten Vorträge einer Tagung, die im Mai 2008 stattfand. Die Beiträge stellen die vielfältigen Ausprägungen und Aspekte dieser Sprache dar und machen damit deutlich, dass "die 68er-Sprache" einen unbestreitbaren Platz in der Kulturgeschichte, insbesondere in der kulturwissenschaftlichen Linguistik, hat. Ihre Erscheinungsformen werden mit diskursanalytischem, sprachpragmatischem, textsortengeschichtlichem oder semiotischem Instrumentarium dargestellt und beschrieben. Der mit 68 eintretende Wandel kommunikativer Praktiken erschließt außerdem die kommunikationsgeschichtliche Perspektive. Damit wird insofern ein kulturwissenschaftlicher Beitrag geleistet zur Sprachgeschichte ebenso wie zur Semiotik, zur Medien- ebenso wie zur Zeitgeschichte.

For many years, scholars struggled to write the history of the constitution and political structure of the Holy Roman Empire. This book argues that this was because the political and social order could not be understood without considering the rituals and symbols that held the Empire together. What determined the rules (and whether they were followed) depended on complex symbolic-ritual actions. By examining key moments in the political history of the Empire, the author shows that it was a vocabulary of symbols, not the actual written laws, that formed a political language indispensable in maintaining the common order.
