This volume offers trenchant studies by renowned scholars who reassess the role of the social sciences in the construction and upkeep of the Pax Americana. The thematic image for this enterprise is the 'fiery hunt' for Ahab's whale, which focuses attention on the strange brew of mixed motives for American ventures abroad. The reach of Pax Americana exceeds its grasp, but this verdict requires deeper insight than simply flushing out cultural premises and conceptual limits. The volume's purpose is to understand the USA's 'fiery hunt,' and thereby to help to end it.

Do we know our do we need home or a home country? What does home mean to modern world -travellers? Didn´t we all overlook signs and signals or misinterpreted them? Are we able to let us fall, to relax completely in hectic times, do we evaluate and judge faces correctly? Most probably we all had - one time or the other - serious questions for God. Maybe we still smile when thinking of certain discussions or meetings we had somewhere in the world - or they still bother us.Stories describes those moments - sometimes longer, sometimes very briefly - which are thought provoking and make us pause for a while to think again and reconsider things. It is about contemplativeness and of pensive moments we all know.

Authority and Participation in a New Democracy focuses on the changes undergone by Mapai, Israel's first ruling party, during Israel's first years of independence, then analyzes the effects of these changes in relation to Israeli political culture. Bareli's main claim is that it was only during this period that a hierarchically-organized group of leaders succeeded in imposing its dominance, fostering obedience within the party and creating oligarchic characteristics in Israel's democracy. The influence of the kibbutz movement, the moshavim movement and of urban intelligentsia- who represented the opposite political view of participatory democracy-was reduced to a minimum. This process would have a profound impact on issues of equality, on the relations between veteran Israelis and immigrants from both European and Islamic countries, and on social and civic norms.

This collection of essays engages with a central theme in scholarship on EU citizenship - the emancipation of certain citizens, the alienation of others - and seeks to expand its horizons to interrogate whether similar debates and trends can be identified in other fields of European integration. The focus of the book is distinctly citizen focused. It delivers the potential for the opening out of analysis of the implications of European citizenship beyond the parameters of Articles 18-25 TFEU and beyond the disciplinary confines of legal analysis alone. The book construes 'EU citizenship' in its broadest sense, and explores the extent to which the European citizen is, or indeed is not, genuinely at the heart of EU law and policy-making. Within the broader theme of empowerment and disempowerment, the contributors reflect on a range of cross-cutting themes; for example, the extent to which channels of citizen participation (can) inform EU policy-making in a 'bottom-up' sense; or whether the EU is a catalyst for the construction of new spaces and new identities

Consecutive constructivism is a moral and political theory which mitigates structural injustice by securing individuals' perception of private morality - that is, inventing procedural devices to make people enhance their moral consciousness - and, at the same time, encourages people to voluntarily concern themselves with procedural justice and public morality. The crucial reason for this position is that a detouring method of not directly dealing with the problem of justice but rather discussing the problem of morals is required to avoid the lucid criticisms of statists that the sovereign ruli
