The present book is the first to undertake a systematic study of Peirce'sconception of historical knowledge and of its value for philosophy. It doesso by both reconstructing in detail Peirce's arguments and giving adetailed account of the many ways in which history becomes an object ofexplicit reflection in his writings.The book's leading idea may be stated as follows: Peirce manages to puttogether an exceptionally compelling argument about history's bearing onphilosophy not so much because he derives it from a well-articulated andpolished conception of the relation between the two disciplines; but onthe contrary, because he holds on to this relation while intuiting that itcan easily turn into a conflict. This potential conflict acts therefore as aspur to put forth an unusually profound and multi-faceted analysis ofwhat it means for philosophy to rely on historical arguments.Peirce looks at history as a way to render philosophical investigationsmore detailed, more concrete and more sensitive to the infinite andunforeseeable nuances that characterize human experience. In this way,he provides us with an exceptionally valuable contribution to a questionthat has remained gravely under-theorized in contemporary debates.

L'Intersubjectivité charnelle veut penser l'unité fondamentale du genre humain fondée sur l'unité primordiale de l'être compris comme être chair de la chair du monde. En reprenant le concept de chair tel qu'il est pensé par Maurice Merleau-Ponty, le livre établit que la violence qui caractérise l'histoire humaine résulte de la méconnaissance de la vraie nature de l'homme. En coupant l'homme de son inhérence charnelle au monde de la vie pour le placer dans le ciel éthéré de l'idéalisme ou de la science mécaniste, la pensée occidentale conduit au nihilisme historique qui engendre la violence de l'homme contre l'homme au nom des intérêts économiques, politiques, raciaux et à la violence de l'homme contre la nature dont il est pourtant issu et de laquelle il dépend ontologiquement.

Cet ouvrage vise à élaborer ce qui n'existe pas encore, à savoir une histoire comparée des philosophies. L'activité philosophique apparaît alors dans la singularité des pratiques nationales et est replacée dans une conjoncture donnée. La seconde préoccupation de l'auteur est de présenter une histoire polémique des historicités observables de Vico à aujourd'hui. Dans ces pages il n'existe donc que des philosophies comme il n'existe que des historicités.
