Abstract

Based on the swisspeace annual conference 2012, this book examines the delicate balance between international interventions and locally led initiatives. It examines how local ownership - emerging as key criteria for any external intervention - is constituted; does this concept only imply local participation or is local control from the outset a must ? Moreover, it addresses the question of what 'local' means in the peacebuilding and development context; which actors on the ground actually represent the local level and how external actors choose their partners from amongst them. Finally, it assesses the potential of locally led initiatives and local conflict resolution mechanisms and their interaction with external interventions. Several authors provide insights on these issues and nuance our thinking about both local ownership and external interventions. As such, the publication aims to encourage critical reflections on this topical debate in peacebuidling and development.

Abstract

This book enhances our understanding of how societies torn by violence can be rebuilt. Instabilities in those societies continue to be fuelled by political marginalization, economic-social inequality, violent crimes, and injustice. Historically, international response has been largely inadequate due to a failure of adaptation to local circumstances. This collection focuses on how peacebuilding programmes can be more effectively carried out to create a more functional society. In a nutshell, this volume sheds light on local practice and experiences that can be utilized to meet unique circumstances of countries that have suffered from a destructive conflict. It investigates the transition to peace by highlighting the missing links between peacebuilding norms and practice, political economy, emotions, justice, and reconciliation.

Abstract

This book challenges the notion of 'conflict resolution' in the Northern Irish and Turkish-Kurdish peace processes, both far-reaching ethno-nationalist conflicts in the post-Cold War era. Incorporating fieldwork carried out until 2015, I. Aytaç Kadioglu compares these conflicts during major peace attempts, from early secret talks and semi-official peace initiatives, to multilateral and internationalised conflict-resolution processes through not only main armed protagonists, but also independent third parties.

As Brexit re-ignites discussion around the border of Northern Ireland, and as the repercussions of the Syrian civil war on the dynamics of the Kurdish conflict continue to unfold, these two cases are particularly important to the study of conflict resolution. In critically assessing existing literature, this book presents an innovative framework for conflict-resolution processes, suggesting that ethno-nationalist conflicts are too complex to be resolved solely through official negotiations.

Abstract

"This book critically examines and analyses the active role played by youth-led social movements in pushing for change and promoting peacebuilding in Africa, and their long-term impacts on society. Africa's history is characterised by youth movements. The continent's youth populations played pivotal roles in the campaign against colonialism, and ever since independence, Africa's youth have been at the center of social mobilisation. Most recently, social media has contributed significantly to a further rise in youth-led social movements. However, the impact of youth voices is often marginalised by patriarchal and gerontocratic approaches to governance, denying them the place, voice, and recognition that they deserve. Drawing on empirical evidence from across the continent, this book analyses the drivers and long-term impacts of youth-led social movements on politics in African societies, especially in the area of peacebuilding. The book draws attention to the innovative ways in which young people continue to seek to re-engineer social space and challenge contexts that deny them their voice, place, recognition and identity. This book will be of interest to researchers across the fields of social movement studies, youth studies, peace and conflict studies, history, political sciences, social justice, and African studies"-- Provided by publisher.
