Still Life painting thematizes the ability of Nature and Art to produce similarities and is therefore predestined for a theorization of mimetic strcutures of Art in general. 17th-Century Netherlandish Still Life painting actively participated in the intellectual discourse of natural philosophy and the natural sciences, even though art history until recently described it, somewhat simplifying, as realistic-representative painting. We urgently need a rehabilitation of the notion of Mimesis. The author restarts the discussion, by putting more emphasis on the historical notions of Nature and Image. She examines how mimetic structures acquired a biotic reproductive capacity in the 17th century. Still Life painting thematizes the ability of Nature and Art to produce similarities and is therefore predestined for a theorization of mimetic structures of Art in general.

Rome, kunst en architectuur geeft een duidelijk en compleet overzicht van de ontwikkeling van Rome vanaf het vroegchristelijke tijdperk, waarbij ook de maatschappelijke verbanden aandacht krijgen. Het boek behandelt de geschiedenis door de eeuwen heen en laat zien hoe zich uit de nederzetting van Romulus de hoofdstad van een wereldrijk en de zetel van het matige pausdom ontwikkelde. U leest over het onstaan van de barok en over de beginperiode van het classicisme in Rome. De grote tijdperken van de westerse kunst worden aanschouwelijk gemaakt door de vele meesterwerken die in deze stad vervaardigd zijn. Centraal staan de architectuur, de stedenbouw, de beeldhouwkunst en de schilderkunst. Ook wordt er aandacht geschonken aan andere kunstvormen. De auteurs leggen daarbij steeds weer een verband met de Europese context : de geschiedenis van Rome weerspiegelt als het ware die van de westerse beschaving.
