Abstract

Abstract

In a peaceful middle-class apartment complex, part-time lecturer Yoon-ju is becoming hypersensitive to a dog's barking coming from somewhere in the complex. Attempting to pinpoint the source, he puts his ear to the floor or listens carefully to the sounds from the ceiling. Then one day, returning from his recycling ritual, he discovers a puppy standing in front of his neighbor's door. Convinced that it is the culprit that has been bothering him, he dognaps the puppy and imprisons it in the basement. Meanwhile, the custodian Hyun-nam searches for the puppy with its young owner. Satisfied that he is rid of the dog, Yoon-ju returns to his apartment only to hear barking again. He rushes to the basement, but the puppy is nowhere to be found ... --Container.

Abstract

Ambitious, solid, risky: Sara Mesa returns with a novel in which the most unsuspected drives of its protagonists emerge while the community builds its scapegoat. The story of Un amor takes place in La Escapa, a small rural town where Nat, a young and inexperienced translator, has just moved. His landlord, who gives him a dog as a welcome gesture, will soon show his true face, and the conflicts around the rented house - a poor construction, full of cracks and leaks - will become a true obsession for him. The rest of the inhabitants of the area - the girl in the store, Píter the hippie, the old and insane Roberta, Andreas the German, the city family who spend there on weekends - will welcome Nat with apparent normality, while mutual misunderstanding and strangeness beat deep down. La Escapa, with the Mount of El Glauco always present, will end up acquiring a personality of its own, oppressive and confused, which will confront Nat not only with his neighbors, but also with himself and his own failures. Full of silences and misunderstandings, of prejudices and misunderstandings, of taboos and transgressions, Un amor addresses, in an implicit but constant way, the issue of language not as a form of communication but as exclusion and difference. Sara Mesa once again confronts the reader with the limits of his own morality in an ambitious, risky and solid work in which, as if it were a Greek tragedy, the most unsuspected drives of its protagonists gradually emerge while, from In parallel, the community builds its scapegoat.

Abstract

With the Hegel Lecture 2010, held by Homi K. Bhabha, the Dahlem Humanities Center is launching the Open Access publication of the series. In his talk, Bhabha evokes the spirit of Hegel in an attempt to understand contemporary issues of ethical witness, historical memory and the rights and representations of minorities in the cultural sphere. Who is our neighbour today? What does hospitality mean for our times? Why is the recognition of others such an agonizing encounter with the alterity of the self? The lecture examplifies how the "Third Space" - one of the key theories of Postcolonialism - helps us to establish a new understanding of cosmopolitanism and hospitality in a globalized world, based on the right of difference in equality.
