Die Frage, ob eine „falsche“ normative Einstellung zur Arbeit zu Arbeitslosigkeit führt, wird zwar häufig diskutiert, wurde aber bisher nicht empirisch untersucht. Die Ergebnisse quantitativer Analysen weisen darauf hin, dass ein solcher Zusammenhang tatsächlich besteht: Sowohl das Eintrittsrisiko in die Arbeitslosigkeit als auch Zahl und Dauer von Arbeitslosigkeits-Phasen werden durch die Einstellung erhöht, dass Arbeit nicht – oder nur unter bestimmten Umständen – eine Pflicht darstellt. Die zweite Frage der Studie betrifft das Wohngebiet als mögliche Quelle der individuellen Einstellungen zur Arbeit. Hier zeigt sich, dass nur geringe Kontexteffekte bestehen: Das Leben in einem Gebiet mit hoher Arbeitslosenquote fördert in geringem Maße die Einstellung, dass Arbeit keine unbedingte Verpflichtung ist.
