Although Herodot's dictum that "Egypt is a gift of the Nile" is proverbial, there has been only scant attention to the way the river impacted on ancient Egyptian society. Egyptologists frequently focus on the textual and iconographic record, whereas archaeologists and earth scientists approach the issue from the perspective of natural sciences. The contributions in this volume bridge this gap by analyzing the river both as a natural and as a cultural phenomenon. Adopting an approach of cultural ecology, it addresses issues like ancient land use, administration and taxation, irrigation, and religious concepts.

A poetic charting of Laura Walker's rural, southern hometown, Rimertown/an atlas delves into the startling landscapes created by the passage of time through people and through place; it is an atlas born of image and voice. Composed of four interwoven strands-a collection of "maps," a collection of "stories," a series of vernacular prose poems, and a fractured narrative-the volume explores various geographies: of the physical world, of the intersection of natural and peopled landscapes, of the passage of time, of leaving and returning, of human relationships, of soldiers and war. Walker asks: how is "home" carried in memory, in landscape, in story, in time? Her poems break and merge, stitching and fragmenting narrative, syntax, and image as they push toward their own geography, "a fever doll, tapered song/ engineered into dusk/ hold the watery stream, its buck and clanging."

Günther Vogt et ses paysagistes ont apporté beaucoup de passion à leurs recherches notamment celles concernant le transformation de sites ou d'étendues de terre dans les paysages. Ils ne veulent pas dépendre seulement des connaissances acquises dans les livres. Ils s'aventurent dans le paysage, à tout moment de la journée et l'année et s'interroger sur ce qu'ils voient là-bas. Ils font place à l'art et la science dans leurs études. La plupart de leurs "excursions" commence par curiosité basée sur quelque chose qu'ils ont vu, entendu ou lu. Dans ce contexte, ils explorent, entre autres choses, les fortifications en France, le Haut-Rhin en Suisse, et les parcs nationaux en Angleterre. Les résultats de leurs "déplacements sur le terrain", des projets de recherche, et les implémentations pratiques sont recueillies dans la présente publication. The Companion contains thirty-nine original contributions from leading scholars within the field, which have been divided into four parts: Experiencing Landscape; Landscape Culture and Heritage; Landscape, Society and Justice; and Design and Planning for Landscape.
