Das Phänomen der Polyphonie ist ein Merkmal, das sich in vielen Erzähltexten findet, ohne dass man es bisher aus narratologischer Perspektive kategorisieren könnte. Zwischen der Vielzahl von Sprechinstanzen, die sich als einstimmig tarnen, aber doch eine Mehrzahl an Stimmen in sich vereinen, klafft eine Lücke innerhalb der Theoriebildung, die sich die Studie zu schließen bemüht. Ausgehend von Ansätzen, die sich allesamt der Mehrstimmigkeit widmen, ohne diese aber in ihren Ausprägungen zu systematisieren, wird eine Typologie entworfen, die es erlaubt, verschiedene Formen zu benennen. Die Vorgehensweise ist komparatistisch und fokussiert neben der Anwendbarkeit auch die Übertragbarkeit auf weitere Nationalphilologien. Zudem erfolgen die Lektüren chronologisch, von der Epoche der Spätaufklärung bis zu Texten der Postmoderne, um zusätzlich einen Beitrag zu einer historischen Narratologie zu leisten. Die Typologie erhebt dabei keinen Anspruch auf Vollständigkeit, sondern will dazu animieren, das Phänomen der Polyphonie weiterzudenken; sie versteht sich als Anregung für Narratologen, Komparatisten und Kulturwissenschaftler, sich dem interessanten wie auch theoretisch noch nicht erschöpfend reflektierten Thema der Mehrstimmigkeit zu widmen. The study proposes a descriptive vocabulary to encompass the diverse range of variants of polyphony in narrative texts. Along with the genetical system, it establishes categories that enable a differentiated classification of various forms of assertions. The analyses are undertaken from a comparative viewpoint in order to emphasize the translatability of the categories to other national philologies.

This book explores hybrid memoirs, combining text and images, authored by photographers. It contextualizes this sub-category of life writing from a historical perspective within the overall context of life writing, before taking a structural and cognitive approach to the text/image relationship. While autobiographers use photographs primarily for their illustrative or referential function, photographers have a much more complex interaction with pictures in their autobiographical accounts. This book explores how the visual aspect of a memoir may drastically alter the reader’s response to the work, but also how, in other cases, the visual parts seem disconnected from the text or underused. Arnaud Schmitt is a Full Professor at the University of Bordeaux, France. He has published two books and multiple articles on autofiction and autobiography.

Dieses Open-Access-Buch geht der Zeitreflexion im Feld der Novellistik nach und ergründet Erzählstrategien und -logiken der literarischen Vertextung von ‚Zeit‘, ihre funktionale Einbindung wie auch ihre selbstreflexive und poetologische Gestaltung in Texten. Die Grundlage bildet ein fundiertes, semiotisches Analyseinstrumentarium. Berücksichtigt wird eine breite Textauswahl mit Werken unter anderem von Büchner, Eichendorff, Gutzkow, Hauff, Hebbel, Mundt, Stifter und Tieck. Den historischen Abschnitt zwischen Goethezeit und Realismus kennzeichnet ein Selbstverständnis als Zwischenphase, in der merklich etwas zu Ende geht, ohne dass bereits etwas Neues begonnen hätte. Verankert ist dieser Problemkomplex in einer epocheneigenen Reflexion von Zeit, deren Spezifik in der Verbreiterung des Zukunftshorizontes und dem Auseinanderklaffen von Zukunftsvorstellung und -realisierung liegt. Dabei stellt sich heraus: Die Zukunft als epistemischer Dreh- und Angelpunkt der Zwischenphase ist hochgradig relevant, flexibel und imponderabel. The focus of this study is the collective of writers known variously as the Birmingham Group, the Birmingham School or the Birmingham Proletarian Writers who were active in the City of Birmingham in the decade prior to the Second World War. Their narratives chronicle the lived-experience of their fellow citizens in the urban manufacturing centre which had by this time become Britain’s second city. Presumed ‘guilty by association’ with a working-class literature considered overtly propagandistic, formally conservative, or merely the naive emulation of bourgeois realism, their narratives have in consequence suffered undue critical neglect. This book repudiates such assertions by arguing that their works not only contrast markedly with other examples of working-class writing produced in the 1930s but also prove themselves responsive to recent critical assessments seeking a more holistic and intersectional approach to issues of working-class identity. Robin Harriott holds the degrees of B.A. (Hons), M. Phil., and was recently (2021) awarded his PhD in English Literature from the University of Birmingham, UK. Formerly a teacher of English, he is now an independent researcher with interests in working-class writing and culture.
