Abstract

For the simulation of stochastic systems, those techniques are essential which are able to speed up the simulation, i.e. the equivalent of increasing the accuracy that can be reached within a given run-time, especially with a focus on rare events. Eugen Lamers explains the principle of simulation speed-up in general, demonstrates the technique RESTART for the simulation of rare events, and addresses its efficiency on distributed systems. Due to the character of RESTART, the efficiency is limited by the high communication overhead. The author introduces the Short-Term Dynamic Simulation concept, developed for the planning of mobile radio networks, which enables fast state space coverage along with the consideration of dynamic aspects. He analyses the speed-up potential on a theoretical basis with analytically solvable Markov models for different utilisations. With realistic models for UMTS network planning he shows that the evaluation of dynamic performance measures benefits from the Short-Term Dynamic Simulation technique.

Abstract

The design and development of cost-effective mobile broadband wireless access networks is a key challenge for many mobile network operators. The over-dimensioning or under-dimensioning of an access network results in both additional costs and customer dissatisfaction.   Thushara Weerawardane introduces new transport technologies and features for High Speed Packet Access (HSPA) and Long-Term Evolution (LTE) networks. Using advanced scientific methods, he proposes new adaptive flow control and enhanced congestion control algorithms, then defends them with highly-developed analytical models derived from Markov chains. For faster analysis, compared to long-lasting detailed simulations, these models provide optimum network performance and ensure reliable quality standards for end users during transport network congestion. Further, the author investigates and analyzes LTE transport network performance by introducing novel traffic differentiation models and buffer management techniques during intra-LTE handovers.

Abstract

Mobile Internet services are a tremendous success in Japan, but fail to gain the acceptance of European customers. Which factors explain the Japanese success story? What makes the difference: demand side factors rooted in a different culture or the fact that Japanese firms manage innovation process differently than their European counterparts? Drawing on a comparative case study Michael Haas analyses the consequences of differences in the innovation strategies of Japanese and European telecommunication firms. He focuses on the following questions: Which are the implications of different approaches towards management of systemic innovations? Do differences matter and why do they matter? The author shows that Europeans can learn from the Japanese and gives advice for future approaches to developments in the European telecommunications industry.
