Abstract

Transracial adoption is one of the most contentious issues in adoption politics and in the politics of race more generally. Some who support transracial adoption use a theory of colorblindness, while many who oppose it draw a causal connection between race and culture and argue that a black child's racial and cultural interests are best served by black adoptive parents. Hawley Fogg-Davis carves out a middle ground between these positions. She believes that race should not be a barrier to adoption, but neither should it be absent from the minds of prospective adopters and adoption practitioners. Fogg-Davis's argument in favor of transracial adoption is based on the moral and legal principle of nondiscrimination and a theory of race-consciousness she terms "racial navigation." Challenging the notion that children "get" their racial identity from their parents, she argues that children, through the process of racial navigation, should cultivate their self-identification in dialogue with others. The Ethics of Transracial Adoption explores new ground in the transracial adoption debate by examining the relationship between personal and public conceptions of race and racism before, during, and after adoption.

Abstract

The research question being “How Do Mixed-Race Individuals Perceive Themselves in Francophone Belgium? The Identity Development of Belgian-Burundian Young Adults”, this paper focuses on Mixed-race individuals of a Belgian and a Burundian descent and their identity development. Through the interview of eight Belgian-Burundians aged between nineteen and twenty-six years old, the study demonstrates how various factors jointly influence their identity process and therefore their racial identity. These factors include one’s bonds with his/her family, his/her knowledge of the mother tongue, his/her cultural attachments to his/her countries of origin, others’ perception of himself/herself, his/her gender, and his/her experiences of racism. These determinants affect Mixed-race individuals through their lifetime as they try to find themselves and build their identity. It is an evolving process, suggesting that one’s identity is not fixed and can change over time. In addition, the research shows that Mixed-race Belgian-Burundians living in Belgium face similar experiences and encounter comparable challenges. They respond individually to these challenges and develop their personal racial identity. While some individuals agree with existing racial categories allocated to them and embrace the latter, others reject them and rather claim a different existing racial category or a personal one.

Abstract

International adoptions are both high-profile and controversial, with the celebrity adoptions and critically acclaimed movies such as Casa de los babys of recent years increasing media coverage and influencing public opinion. Neither celebrating nor condemning cross-cultural adoption, Karen Dubinsky considers the political symbolism of children in her examination of adoption and migration controversies in North America, Cuba, and Guatemala.Babies Without Borders tells the interrelated stories of Cuban children caught in Operation Peter Pan, adopted Black and Native American children who became icons in the Sixties, and Guatemalan children whose 'disappearance' today in transnational adoption networks echoes their fate during the country's brutal civil war. Drawing from extensive research as well as from her critical observations as an adoptive parent, Karen Dubinsky aims to move adoption debates beyond the current dichotomy of 'imperialist kidnap' versus 'humanitarian rescue.' Integrating the personal with the scholarly, Babies Without Borders exposes what happens when children bear the weight of adult political conflicts.

Abstract

A Kansas City Star 2008 Notable BookSince the early days of Hollywood film, portrayals of interracial romance and of individuals of mixed racial and ethnic heritage have served to highlight and challenge fault lines within Hollywood and the nation’s racial categories and borders. Mixed Race Hollywood is a pioneering compilation of essays on mixed-race romance, individuals, families, and stars in U.S. film and media culture.Situated at the cutting-edge juncture of ethnic studies and media studies, this collection addresses early mixed-race film characters, Blaxploitation, mixed race in children’s television programming, and the "outing" of mixed-race stars on the Internet, among other issues and contemporary trends in mixed-race representation. The contributors explore this history and current trends from a wide range of disciplinary perspectives in order to better understand the evolving conception of race and ethnicity in contemporary culture.
