Pets, companion animals of the people, are usually small, humorous and charming. We find what we could call pet architecture, architecture having pet like characteristics, existing in the most unexpected places within the Tokyo city limits. They are areas such as a 1-meter width space among many closely placed buildings, a small and subdivided piece of land, or a long and slender city block sandwiched between the road and the railroad. These unusual places are the byproducts of urban development and have been produced abundantly in Tokyo. This undefined space has come into existence in the marginal realm between the different city systems, or it is immanent in the city system itself! They are small and though they appear, at first glance, to be somewhat cold and distant to the surrounding environment we can say that this type of architecture adopts the attributes of pet culture and have become pets of the city environment. They too are small, humorous and charming in their own way!

Each design surveyed here is an excellent example of how a less is more architectural strategy, which economizes on space, light and mass, can lend itself to aesthetic yet functional structures. Restraint and austerity emphasize geometric form, focusing on the elemental structure rather than superfluous features. From a house in San Francisco's Soma district to a Buddhist temple in Kyoto, a mountain shelter in Switzerland to St. Louis's Pulitzer foundation museum, this book canvasses twenty-one of the world's most efficient minimalist designs. Minimalism's unique use of shapes, lines and materials gives way to strong, simplistic designs, such as those featured in this book.

Pure shapes, simple lines, clear geometry -- minimalism focuses on the necessities. It places emphasis on a plain and obvious message rather than on superfluous details. A steel wave suggests movement and rapidity, plain glass introduces transparency, large openings are sources of space and light -- refinement has become the new means of expression. Each single detail becomes significant and a key element of the project. Shape, material and consistency exclusively at the service of function -- the result can be admired in these extremely innovative and honest contemporary buildings, which reveal minimalism as an attitude aiming at abstraction, functionalism and purification

Mark Linder shows how minimalist art of the 1960s was infiltrated by architecture, resulting in a reconfiguration of the disciplines of both art and architecture. Linder traces the exchange of concepts and techniques between architecture and art through a reading of the work of critics Clement Greenberg, Colin Rowe, Michael Fried, and the artist-writer Robert Smithson, and then locates a recuperation of "the architecture of minimalism" in the contemporary work of John Hejduk and Frank Gehry.
