Mesenchymal Stromal Cell (MSC) biology has been studied for more than 4 decades and the cells have been investigated for potential clinical applications for more than 15 years. Progress has become exponential over the past decade due mainly to the broad therapeutic potential of these cells.   However, MSC studies have also been subject to controversy and increasing scrutiny as new mechanisms of action are reported and ever-expanding therapeutic applications pursued. In this book, leading authorities from all over the world, who are actively involved in this field, provide state-of-the-art knowledge of the basic biology, translational requirements and latest clinical experience with MSCs.  This cutting edge book is the ideal resource for scientists and clinicians interested in pursuing an important and rapidly developing field of research that will eventually help patients and address urgent unmet medical needs. Features include: Coverage of the biology of MSCs, latest understanding of  mechanisms of action, and role in tissue homeostasis and regeneration Identifying the potential of MSCs in proceeding from bench to bedside from regulatory , GMP production, ethical and safety aspects Critical analysis of clinical studies and the potential of MSCs to treat a wide variety of human diseases and tissues.   .

Abstract

Stem Cells and COVID-19 presents up-to-date knowledge on the effect of hematopoietic and mesenchymal stem cells to combat SARS-CoV-2 infection in its diagnosis, treatment and prevention. In addition, the book critically discusses challenges, highlighting outstanding questions and future perspectives. Written by global experts in the field for both pre-clinical and clinical practitioners, this comprehensive book delves into how stem cells have a strong potential in developing better diagnostic, treatment and preventive strategies in SARS-CoV-2 infection. Both hematopoietic and mesenchymal stem cells are critical to better understand the response of immune system to coronavirus infection in both healthy and co-morbid conditions in the development of effective vaccines and immunotherapies.

Abstract

The concept of advanced therapy medicinal products (ATMPs) encompasses novel kinds of medicines for human use that are based on genes, cells or tissues. These intend to offer not only regeneration, but complete functional recovery of diseased tissues and organs using different strategies. Gene therapy, cell therapy and tissue engineering are the main areas in which promising advanced therapies are emerging. The eye is a very complex organ whose main structures, the cornea and the retina, play a pivotal role in maintaining normal vision, as severe alterations in these tissues can lead to blindness. Ocular tissues are starting to benefit from ATMPs by fighting against the enormous complexity and devastating potential of many ocular diseases. However, developments arising from this field of work face important challenges related to vectors to deliver drugs and genetic material to target tissues, suitable biomaterials to prepare cell scaffolds and cell stemness, among others—not to mention the complicated legislation around ATMPs, the complexity in production and quality control and the absence of standardized protocols. The purpose of this Special Issue is to serve as an overview of the current progress in the application of cell and gene therapies, as well as tissue engineering to restore functionality in diseased ocular structures, and the challenges linked to reaching patients.

Abstract

Mesenchymal Stem Cells or Multipotent Mesenchymal Stromal Cells (collectively referred to as MSCs) are currently being tested in a number of clinical trials for various diseases including graft-versus-host disease, Crohn’s disease, myocardial infarction, stroke, diabetes, cartilage defects, and many others. The increasing number of clinical trials globally indicates the likely therapeutic potential of this specialized adult stem cell.  Over the last decade, there has been tremendous progress towards understanding an MSC’s phenotype, expansion features in culture, differentiation ability and global gene and protein expression profiles.  Despite the enormous progress and data accrual at the molecular and cellular levels, several questions remain as to the utility of MSCs for clinical applications.    Mesenchymal Stem Cell Therapy is a comprehensive collection of information comprised of both basic and pre-clinical biological studies as well as current advances in clinical applications within the MSC therapy field.  This text is a resource for both the basic life science and cell therapy researchers and includes a spectrum of review chapters from top experts in the field discussing clinical scale culture, regulatory issues, genetic engineering, disease specific applications and others.
